Poorman's Microweights

I hadn't used microweights a lot, until I started sledgehammer levering. I discovered a very small amount of weight makes a huge difference, in this lift. I'll describe three different methods I use, and one a friend uses.

The first method I used was to buy a set of Plate Mates. They use magnets to attach themselves to weights. I have two of the 2.5 pound ones. While they work great, but they are expensive. I did discover, while working with blobs, if I cut the plastic off the outer surface of the Plate Mate, I could attach them to each other.

Using the idea Plate Mates used, I cut the magnets out of some old speakers. They ended up weighing 1.5 pounds and work just like Plate Mates.

When I needed even lighter weights, I decided to experiment with chain. I cut off one link and took it to work to weigh. If you don't have access to a scale, just take it to the Post Office. If you go late at night, or put it in an envelope, they will be glad to weigh it for you. Then just add links until you have the desired weight. I use rubber bands to attach the chain to the bar. It would be very easy to make any weight you desire. I have two one pound and one half pound version.

The last idea is from one of my friends. He used soda bottles and added sand to give the desired weight. He then tied a piece of string to the neck and made a loop to attach it to the bar.

I hope one of these ideas will work for you. Happy lifting.
