Homemade Parallettes

I've used several parallette designs. The first was a made from pvc and is described in great detail in the September 2003 Crossfit issue. At my current weight, 205, my lightest in a longtime, it had quite a bit of flex to it. I was a little worried about it breaking, leading to a bad day. I also normally bulk up to 230-250 in the winter and really don't think they would hold. I gave them to a friend and they work great for him. He's around 170. It was made of schedule 40 pvc. I considered making one out of, heavier, schedule 80. In the end I used metal pipe, as I got over 1/2 of what I needed from a friend.

I use 1 1/2 inch for the main bar, the only portion I had to purchase. On the downward portion of the elbow, I used a bushing to go to 1 inch pipe. The bolts to the floor flanges are counter sunk on the bottom. I also added some non-skid tape to the wood. They are rock solid.

If you had to purchase all of the materials, I think they would run around $50. If you used pipe in place of the wood and flanges, it would go up quit a bit.

It's an idea to consider, depending on your weight and available resources.
