Fighting Irish Rugby Football Club

Rules for Membership

1.      All members are required to follow the letter and spirit of the Mission and Rules for Membership to remain a member of The Fighting Irish Rugby Football Club.

2.      Only the highest levels of ethics and sportsmanship will be acceptable from members of the Fighting Irish RFC. Any member who commits a serious violation of these standards can be immediately removed from the Club by a coach or majority vote of members. Whether or not a violation is “serious” is left to the judgment of the coaches/advisors. The decision to remove a member is final. An expelled member may apply for new membership one calendar year after his/her expulsion.

3.      Make every effort to promptly pay any money owed to the Club (dues, equipment). If you are having financial difficulties, speak to a coach. As stated previously, it is a firm conviction of the Club that no interested individuals be discouraged by financial concerns!

4.      For meetings:

a.      Because time will often be limited for our meetings, arrive promptly and take a seat quickly and quietly. Social time will be held after Club business.

b.      Please plan ahead so that you do not have to leave early from a meeting.

c.      Please do not talk while recognized members are speaking.

d.      If you have questions, wait to be recognized.

e.      Respect the members who are presenting information or answering questions; respect other members’ opinions and ideas.

f.        Bring a pen and paper to every meeting.

5.      For Practices:

a.      Arrive promptly! Our facility time-allotment may be limited. We must start when scheduled.

b.      Every member must sign-in with the club secretary at the beginning of every practice and match on the Club roster.

c.      Each member must bring his own practice equipment including practice jersey, shorts, fluids and kit. Match jerseys cannot be worn during practice.

d.      Follow coaches’ instructions immediately; coaches will explain drills as you go. Ask questions only if you are having trouble performing the drill. Do not second-guess the coaches.

e.      Every player must have all proper equipment to practice, especially mouthpiece.

f.        Every session will begin with short warm-up, then stretching led by captains. If you are late, you will do this on your own before beginning the activities in progress.

g.      Every session will end with a brief cool-down and stretching led by captains. If you need to leave early, you must stretch before leaving the field.

h.      If you have a physical limitation that should be accommodated during practice, you must tell a coach.

i.        If you become injured or ill during practice, and it is not evident to those around you, tell a coach or other player immediately.

j.         Use equipment only as directed by the coaches; after practice help collect all equipment to give to the appropriate coach or member.

5.   (For Practices, continued):

k.      The First Aid Kit should be handled only by a coach or trainer except in emergencies.

l.         Since practice time is very limited, members who wish to play in the matches must take responsibility for their own physical conditioning on their own time! Members should be doing aerobic exercise three times a week, and some sort of anaerobic strength training three times a week (ie. weight training).

6.      For Matches:

a.      Arrive at the scheduled time for warm-up and stretching. Players who arrive late without prior approval will not be selected to start the match or allowed to play until warmed-up and stretched.

b.      Every member should bring his/her kit to every match. The kit should contain: athletic tape, pre-tape, extra shoelaces, spare mouthpiece, Vaseline, snack, fluid. It is recommended that players bring a change of clothing for the post-match party.

c.      Club match jerseys will be distributed during pre-game stretching. These jerseys are the property of the Club and will be collected by the coaches after the match.

d.      The coaches will choose the starting players and assign positions for them. These decisions are final.

e.      The 3 match captains will usually consist of one forward, the fullback or scrum half and one other back. Captains may be elected for each game or for the entire season.

f.        The coaches will substitute as necessary and assign positions after match play has begun. It is the philosophy of the Club and coaches that every member be given the opportunity to play in every match when possible and appropriate.

g.      At the start of every game, both teams will line up along the mid-field line to shake hands. At the conclusion of every game, both teams will line up along the mid-field line to congratulate each other. Players refusing to do this will be disciplined.

h.      All players are expected to maintain the highest levels of sportsmanship whether competing or cheering from the sidelines. Any player who violates this expectation will be removed from the game and/or the field area and may be expelled from the Club.

i.        Every player is expected to play with 100% effort and teamwork!

j.         After the concluding handshakes, the Club will show sportsmanship including three cheers for the opposing team, three for the referee and three for the fans.

k.      Before leaving the field, all members will help collect equipment and clean up the area.

l.         Immediately after the match, the Social Committee with parents and Huggers will prepare the post-match party. All members will help clean up after the party.
