I'm New to the list... hi Kelly, FGF2 is a protein that has shown neurotrophic effect in many areas of the brain. its effects include survival, neurite extension, synapse formation, increase in choline acetyltransferase activity, dopamine levels, and glutamic acid decarboxylase(GAD) activity. Toxicology evaluation, showed that the FGF2 is a non toxic protein and the side effects consist only in producing overactivity in neurons when FGF2 is given in high dosages, causing headache and light irritability. the benefits far outweighs any possible minor side effects, which are temporary, as the brain re-arranges, and re-routes. the improvements are permenent, because you are actually growing new neurons. Not evryone is a good candidate for FGF2, and the results will vary from one patient to the next. I am so thankful someone told me about FGF2, and then I read all I could before making the decision. my son has been on the treatment for 6 months and has made tremendous improvements. one month after starting FGF2 , he started producing excesive saliva. he didnot drool, but instead would spit. he had no control of it. then his level of awareness was very low, impulsive, very uninhibited, so he would spit evrywhere in the house and out. it was pretty bad. I talked to DR.A. and he said it was possible that it was from FGF2. and that it would eventually go away. well it is 80% better, and Dr.A. also said that there will be other unwanted or unpleasant behaviours/or what we may call side effects as the patient goes through the road of recovery, and healing, but they are temporary. some parents have experienced hyperactivity with their kids.
