NAACP and the Family Unit
Have you noticed in the news lately the flailings of the NAACP to remain relevant in the civil rights community and Blacks in particular? We see Rev. Jackson and Rev. Sharpton seeking publicity in questionable circumstances to claim victimization of Black people. Why does it seem these two men over the years have become the gadflies of the news media? Is it because there is no racism or because the NAACP has failed to address the core issues of Blacks in a meaningful way? The answer lies in the observation of interactions between the NAACP, NOW and ACLU.
Has anyone noticed how each group does not criticize the actions of the other when their particular focus clearly violates the civil rights of their members? Why doesn’t NOW challenge the ACLU when it defends pornographers when those actions clearly exploits and demeans women and children? Why doesn’t the NAACP challenge NOW when it proposes laws that destroy the Black family unit? Why doesn’t the ACLU and NAACP challenge NOW when they advocate judicial behavior discriminating against men and children in Family Law? Why doesn’t the NAACP protest loudly when the ACLU defends racists such as the Klan and Aryan Nation?
It seems that the NAACP made itself irrelevant to the core issues facing Blacks today when it tiptoed around the ACLU and NOW to focus on victimization by whites. What are those core issues: The Family Unit, Education, Crime and Poverty. The symptoms of failing to support the core issues/values is child abuse, crime and poverty. The success of every immigrant group in America owes that success to the Family Unit. From the central core value of Family the solutions to Education, Crime and Poverty find their answer. The involvement of men in the family unit provides the missing component to child rearing in the successful transition from childhood to a productive member of society. Only one group in the history of America has generally failed to succeed. Blacks as a group were disadvantaged by slavery due to the slave owners selling off parts of the family unit. Now the government has engaged in the same behavior through Welfare and Family Law with devastating results.
The NAACP has failed to address the problem of fatherlessness in the dissolution of the family unit. Men are seen as the stereotypical problem by not sticking around to contribute to the family. The NAACP accepted that stereotype about Black men and men in general when it failed to confront NOW in promoting anti-family laws. If the NAACP is to be relevant at all to Blacks as a group, then they must end their silence when NOW and ACLU promotes policies that are harmful to Blacks, especially to children and men. The success of Blacks as a group is straight-forward. It begins with parental responsibility. It is not enough to wring ones hands at fatherlessness. We must stop rewarding destructive behavior. We must not merely give lip service to the best interests of children by using the Family Unit as a platitude. Child custody is the first step on the road to success.
The NAACP needs to make an issue out of Family Law judges awarding default custody of children to unwed mothers upon applying for child support. The practice is not only racist and gender bias but destructive of children. They accomplished this based on the stereotype that men were not viable single parents and used that justification for default child custody rulings against unwed fathers and divorcing fathers. Not only are the Judge’s rulings disproportional when gender is considered but even more so when the father is Black. White men get custody approximately 10% of the time, Black men however only get custody 5% of the time. Now we are having to deal with the consequences of this behavior: Child Abuse, crime, high school drop rate, high infant mortality, drug abuse, low vaccination rates, all of which have a common factor, single parenthood, headed overwhelmingly by women i.e. fatherlessness due to Judge's custody rulings. Disproportionality is always a sign of discrimination. Where there is smoke, there is fire!
Children are our future. This is especially true where multiple children are birthed by more than one father to one woman. Custody needs to be awarded to the male to give him the opportunity to be a parent. A woman with only one child should give equal access to both parents and therefore shared custody should be awarded by the Courts at the first child. America is the land of opportunity, and opportunity starts with individual responsibility. When automatic presumption of custody is shifted from females to males it does three things: One, it removes the profit motive for women to collect Welfare and Child Support payments, when there is no profit in having children it eliminates the motivation to have them outside of the Family Unit. It forces women to become contributing members of society. Two, it discourages men from inappropriate sexual behavior and exploitation of females for sex. Thirdly, it gives the male something to live for, to support and it raises self worth. Children above all other individual motivators give men the "kick in the pants" to strive for greater success since they see it as improving their children’s lot in life above their own. Government has a vital interest in promoting that success given the current costs of having to mitigate the existing social policy failure of the Courts. When men take responsibility for success, women naturally gravitate toward that man. In the success of the Family Unit, Blacks as a group will rise in society.
