He won a war and it looks like the economy is turning around.  Consumer spending is up, the technology bubble has been reset, and the Dow is on the rise.

Inevitably there will be people who will downvote this.

I hope Bush gets reelected.  Look how much good he did for us so far.  All everyone concentrates on is how bad the economy was.  Well - obviously he got us through the Iraqi war quick and successfully - and now [as matty said] consumer spending is on the rise, and the economy is going  upward.  He would be the best thing for our nation.

When Clinton was in the White House, everyone talked about sex.  Now that Bush is in the White House, everyone talks about war.  I don't know about anyone else, but I'd rather talk about sex than about war.

"...it looks like the economy is turning around."

Heh...things must be getting better in America, I'm eating pigeon for supper tonight instead of the usual lard.  Wait a minute...the pigeon is a squab, and pigeons breed regardless of the economy, they breed because it's spring.

Could it be that the economic "improvement" we're seeing is just part of a natural cycle?

I didn't intend to imply that Bush was the reason for the upturn.  But remeber 1992 when Bush Sr. was booted?  It was because after the war the economy did not turn around.  It looks like it is for Jr.  Expect another 4-year term ffor Dubya.

Consumer spending is up, Bush didn't accomplish that, it happened on its own. Presidents/Government has very little control on the economy despite what they say. It goes up and down, they can control the booms and depressions to a point. Consumer spending was bound to go up at one point in time. It just so happened to start to rise now. Once again, I lead you to my quote. Government has spending. The rest relies more upon the person, sure the government can give tax breaks and incentives, but its up to the consumer and/or business to do the work.

Until the Government can get stay on the general trend of inflation at 3-5%, then the government doesn't have control of the economy.

Did I say that Bush is the reason for the economic up turn?
posted by Mattty2Phatty on 4/29/03 9:35 PM

Presidents very rarely, if ever, can turn an economy sour or red hot.  The market moves in mysterious waves, George's hand can't touch it, only the invisible hand will.  However, most people blame the Pres. when the economy is bad, and rel-elect when its bad.  The turn around will ensure that he gets re-elected because thats simply what happens.

Though "He won a war" could refer to a war with the economy since the rest of your post was economically speaking. With the "and" it makes it seem as though he won a war and helped(when I say "help" I mean it to be strong) fix the economy. You then go on to say how the economy is fixed and from how I read it, you seemed to almost related it to George W. Bush.

First off - I was not the one that downvoted you on that.  Second of all - I'm not trying to sound mean - I just want facts that support your incorrect believing of Bush not following the Bill of Rights.   And what do you mean you cant wait to come out from under his non domestic policy... that doesn't make sense.

Domestic Issues
posted by MBorjoyzee on 4/30/03 3:29 AM

I want the President to get out of other countries and back in this one. We spend a great deal of money to aid and fight other nations, but where is my aid? My school district, here in Las Vegas, is making some cutbacks. The district is toying with taking away our music programs, athletics, shortening the school year in order to pay people less, and messing with busses again. Short on ordinary textbooks, we have a library thats been outdated longer than I've been alive. Some of our teachers are working two jobs- one at the high school, one at the community college, just to make ends meet. Some of my favorites- no.. my most important teachers- plan to leave Nevada if their paychecks get any lighter- for the simple reason that they can barely afford to feed their families.

Something that really irks me is Social Security. It is NOT a piggy bank. Everytime the government needs something, they take it from social security. Yet, on the other hand, they give out tax breaks(with the lions share going to the people who dont need it). Know what..? Keep the extra taxes and leave Social Security alone.

And healthcare? Why arent we all covered? I'll admit I'm uneducated on this one, will someone please explain to me what we need medical insurance for if they're always taking money out of my paycheck for this obscure thing called medicare? I would like to know.

So go ahead.. help Iraq if thats what you really want to do, but take care of your own people FIRST. I'm not even going to touch on the environmental issues, or the statement Bush made about forest fires.. If we cut down the forests there'll be no forest fires. Or something to that extent. I'm not going to mess with it because really, no one gives a damn.

Sorry for the rant. But thats why in the next election, the first one in which I can vote, I'll pick someone who doesnt want wars, who will take care of their own business.

The problems with the poll
posted by Sparkkee on 5/1/03 3:23 PM

1. Only 38 users voted, I didn't vote because I didn't know this was an actual survey. But that is not the point. the fact is that 50% of 38 people doesn't say a lot for the poll.

2. How come that if 4 people voted for "anyone who could beat Bush" and got 12%, but 4 people couldn't tell and they only got 4%

3. This was an open ended poll, any answer could be given, even "didn't know." There really wasn't any firm choices. We know of Bush but there isn't anything else to compare him too. There is no democratic runner, so we don't know his/her views, there is no third party runner, and like Madona or Jay Leno is going to run. The fact is this was clearly biased in favor of Bush. The only answers that should be acceptable are "Bush" "they don't know" and "I couldn't tell." Maybe "a Democrat," but that goes without knowing a lot.

4. Isn't "not knowing" and "can't telling" near the same thing?

The fact of the matter is if anyone truly believes this survey and/or gets all "Bush won yippe"(or the like) then you're blind\, hoodwinked to the fact that this poll would have supported Bush no matter what. I'd say give this poll again when a Repulican, Democrat, and third party runner for the presidency has been made, and don't leave it as open ended as it is.  Also, poll more people.
