55 word short stories are a popular and fun writing exercise that are a challenge for anyone. The object is to write a coherent short story complete with character(s), setting, plot and resolution. The objective of 55+1 word short stories is to achieve that goal in exactly 56 words. The total of 56 words is just to be different from the many other 55 word fiction sites out there.
The guidelines:
Write a 56word short story.
Do a word count using your word processing software. Be aware that MS Word counts hyphenated words as one, which they aren't for this form of writing, unless the prefix of a word is hyphenated, eg: co-written.
Include a title and your name, or nom-de-plume, if you wish. Do NOT count the title and your name as part of the 56 words.
Submit a maximum of 3 stories at a time in the body of an email. Attachments will NOT be opened.
You can include a link to your own website, blog or email address.
Please do not submit more than once in a one month period.
55 + 1 does not accept previously published stories.
55 + 1 asks for the exclusive publishing rights for one month before you submit your story elsewhere. If you do publish it elsewhere, 55 + 1 asks that "First published at 55 + 1" be included.
Although the rights always remain with the author, 55 + 1 reserves the right to archive your story in perpetuity.
