| The Fifth North Carolina was created in the spring of 1776 with men drawn from the New Bern, Edenton and Hillsborough Districts. Once recruitments filled its ranks, the regiment, consisting of eight companies, was accepted for Continental service on May 7, 1776. After a short period of service in North Carolina, it was sent to the main army under General Washington and assigned to the North Carolina Brigade on July 8, 1777. On May 29, 1778, enlisted personnel were consolidated into the Second North Carolina Regiment and its officers sent back to North Carolina to recruit four new battalions to serve for nine months. The regiment was re-organized to nine companies during the fall of 1778 at Halifax, NC and assigned to Sumner's Brigade (which later became Armstrong's Brigade) of the Southern Department on January 11, 1779. On May 12, 1780, the regiment was captured by the British Army at Charleston, SC and officially disbanded on January 1, 1781. Our re-activated unit honors the memory of the men who fought for our independence by portraying them at various living histories and reenactments.
