In October 2004 I received an email and the above picture from Henry Serne` from Rotterdam in Holland.
The car was made in 1982 as a 1.1 hatchback and was rebuilt by a company called Bieber of Borken in Germany in 1994 as a cabriolet. According to Henry the company also converted Escorts, Golfs, and BMW's. The firm was reputed to have converted about 12 Mk1 Fiestas but didn't keep any records and went bankrupt a few years back so the truth will never be known.
As this car was rebuilt in 1994 it has a slightly different conversion to the earlier Mk1 rebuilds. Henry thinks there are around 5 mk1 conversions still on the road in Holland.
Henry bought the car in 2001 from its 69 year old 2nd owner, the man who ordered the converible conversion. He also had the car resprayed from light metallic blue to purple. Sadly the owner had a heart attack and never finished the car interior so it stood in a heated garage for 9 years until Henry bought it.
The interior was refitted using a complete Mk1 XR2 interior, including the dashboard. Once the car was roadworthy again Henry visited the previous owner to take him for his first ride in the car he had started building years before.
Until I heard from Henry I'd only heard of the Beiber Mk2 Fiesta conversion.I have one British Bieber car to add to the site when I get time. Henry also sent me a link to the German Fiesta Club where I found more Mk1 convertibles.....watch this space. Thanks Henry.
