Arthedain

After Earendur died, the realm of Arnor was divided between his three sons. These realms were: Arthedain, Rhudaur, and Cardolan. In Arthedain the line of Isildur was maintained, but in Rhudaur and Cardolan the line soon diminished. There was feud between the three neighboring counties, mainly over the palantiri - Arthedain held all three of the northern seeing stones. In the reign of Argeleb, King of Arthedain, Arthedain seized power from the other two weaker realms. They were resisted by Rhudaur, who was in secret league with Angmar. Argeleb was killed in battle. His son Arveleg drove back the enemy forces from the Weather Hills. In 1409, an army came from Angmar, destroying the tower of Amon Sul, and slaying King Arveleg. But with the help of the elves, Arthedain was maintained, until 1974, when the Witch-king came down on the last surviving realm of Arnor, and drove out the Dunedain. Thus an end came to Arnor for 1046 years, when Aragorn II, King of Gondor, re-founded it.
