Day 4 - 06/18/01
June 18. Like I said, I was having problems sleeping that night. Part of the
problem was that I had a monstrous headache. The other part of the problem was likely to be
that I was so excited after seeing Duran Duran in concert that my subconscious was in the middle
of a sprint. About 5 AM Japan time, I groggily wake up, pop a couple pretzels and crackers, and
take a Tylenol. My dad wakes up and thinks I'm being a lazy bum.
In actuality, I think what happened was I wasn't used to the humidity and the heat. Which is quite ironic
considering I'm from Washington D.C. and everyone knows how horrible the hot and muggy summers
are here. But I think anyone who was at the Forum on June 17th can vouch for the fact that despite
the air-conditioning, the humidity of the Japanese night hung in the air in visible vapor. Although I must
have chugged quite a lot of water during the concert, I probably was a bit dehydrated. My brain was a little preoccupied
with the concert I suppose (*giggle*). I ended up sleeping the entire day, trying to rid myself
of this bug. I'm thinking that I probably was incubating some sort of flu bug before I even
left the States, and the one night I don't get enough rest - BOOM! I get sick. It sucks to be
me sometimes! Tina and Michelle had asked me if I wanted to go to Japan Disneyland with them, but
I waved them off, saying I had to recover from the first concert to make sure I could actually
go to the second one.
Some of you are probably saying at this point, "are you crazy? You should have been yukking
it up with the band." But you don't know what it's like to be me. Actually, I had a little
"episode" of my own during the first concert, and while I can't really explain it myself, it scared me
and was a warning bell that I needed to rest. So resting most of the day on Monday was a good thing.
I finally got up around 5 PM, and my dad said that it might be a good idea to do some sightseeing at night. This had
two good repercussions - one, there'd be less people and two (more importantly), it wouldn't
be oppressively hot. I'm photosensitive which means I am extremely sensitive to the sun, which
often restricts what I can do in the daytime. So we decided to see Asakusa via the subway, our
first venture to the subway system. One of the most famous pagodas in Japan is located there,
unfortunately since we went at night, we figured we wouldn't get a good picture of it. There are quite a few
interesting god statues in Asakusa, as well as a bell tower, and many places for worship. In any
temple or shrine, there's a coin collecting box, that you're supposed to throw money into when
you pray to this deity or that. So this was the beginning of that.
