fieldsofeden...in a nutshell...or two...

Greets to all! I'm Mary, better known as fieldsofeden. I'm a senior biology student, specializing in cell, molecular biology and genetics at the University of Maryland. I've only been a Duran Duran fan since this year, but they've captured my heart and mind rather easily. I'm a sucker for songs with a good danceable beat and amazing lyrics. And I'm not talking about the original five guys only - Duran Duran, in all its forms from '78 to present.

Duran Duran came to me in a most unusual way. IMO anyway. One day in mid-July this year, I was at work, and I fainted. I got rushed to the hospital, got all sorts of tests done, which all turned up negative. I have a particular condition in which I get fatigued very easily, so I think I was just exhausted. Regardless, I was released with a clean bill of health from the hospital, and the ER doc basically told me I better get some rest - so I stayed home for a week. So I had a lot of free time on my hands, and I ended up watching a lot of TV just because we don't have cable in the dorms. One morning, before I was to see one of my doctors for a check-up, I was flipping the channels and happened upon VH1 which was having a Behind the Music show playing. Guess who it was on? And, as they say, the rest was history...

In addition to being a big Duran Duran fan, I am also a steadfast supporter and enthusiast of John Taylor's solo work. Although I miss him being in Duran Duran, I'm glad he's had the opportunity to branch out, write his own songs, do his own thing. His lyrics are extremely honest and you can tell he pours his heart into writing those songs. He's still working on playing bass and singing at the same time, so it's understandable that his singing isn't as polished as Simon LeBon's (because Simon's been singing lead for over 2 decades!) but on the other hand, John's recordings have a raw, unpolished feel that make you feel like the song is a big secret for him to know and you to find out. I recently heard two new unreleased tracks by John through Meltdown Radio, and I was truly impressed. "Immortal" is my favorite of the two, and I interpret as meaning that we've all got only one life to live - and we should be spending it with the ones we love instead of worrying about the little details. In short, love prevails over all. Isn't it nice to have a positive spin in music today instead of all that negative energy coming from depressing garbage?

John Taylor and Duran Duran came to me at a time when I was seriously wondering if I had chosen the right career path, and I was seriously doubting myself. It's tough to press on with something that consumes a big part of your life if your heart isn't in it. John showed me that everyone makes mistakes. Everyone wishes there was a part of their life they could live again. Everyone screws up, it's easy to do, to fall into that trap. But it's so much harder to come back from your mistakes and learn from them. And live again. In a sense, I think I have experienced a rebirth. And since becoming a fan of JT and DD, I feel a lot better about myself, where I am, and where I'm going. There was a time (very recently I might add) that I was feeling rather depressed and apathetic about everything in the world - but somehow they rescued me. I will always be grateful for that - and I know, quite happily, that John and Duran Duran will always be a part of my life.

The name fieldsofeden comes from a song of the same name on John's recent 1999 release known as the Japan Album (from AVEX). It professes a love for a country - specifically, England - and it fits me perfectly because I've always been an Anglophile. I'm a huge fan of Led Zeppelin (Jimmy Page is my guitar god), the Beatles, solo Paul McCartney, Elton John, among others; I am also a big fan of 'N Sync, B*Witched, matchbox20, Smash Mouth, the Beach Boys, the Monkees, and Phil Collins (and/or Genesis).
