Now, this important and moving production is being presented here in the Nashville area!
Set in the year 1905, in the small Ukrainian village of Anatevka, Fiddler on the Roof is many concentric stories. We see village life through the eyes of Tevye, the milkman. (In fact, the title of the original book was Tevye, molochnik [milkman], by Shalom Aleichem [the peace of God be upon you].) Swirling around Tevye, as he delivers milk and cheese, are the lives of the others "in the circle of our little village". Tevye is everyman -- his struggles reflect our own.
Frank Fox stars as Tevye. His wife, Paula Fox co-stars as Golde, and also directs the show.
(For more details on this, see our Cast and Crew notes page.)
Tevye's life -- like the life of each villager -- rests upon tradition. Individual and societal lives are scripted and stabilized by these traditions. But, the world outside of Anatevka is beginning to turn at increasing speed. The winds of war and revolution are blowing, and they threaten to overturn everything. This plays out in ways both small and large.
The enduring popularity of Fiddler on the Roof is maintained by its ability to show the thought processes of its strongly-developed characters. Through the lives of these characters, the audience can see that -- even in our highly techno-oriented modern society, one hundred years after the setting of the story -- Tevye's words still ring true. "Without our traditions, our lives would be as shaky as ... as ... as a fiddler on the roof!"
The cast and crew of this community-theater production of Fiddler on the Roof are determined to present a show that is lively, authentic, and entertaining.
And, this sense of family intimacy is enhanced by the fact that we have several sets of relatives portraying characters. Tevye and Golde are a real-life husband and wife. Two of Tevye's three marriage-eligible daughters are real-life sisters. Several other sets of siblings are in the cast. During the run of the rehearsals and showings, we will experience several birthdays and two wedding anniversaries. The cast and crew have become a family of their own.
So, we invite you to bring your family out to see our family....
