If Only,
Saga 1,
Chapter 3
By  JessiE

The next morning, Amanda and Jennifer came to the office as usual.  They lived in a same apartment. They also had a car. They came to work together  with the car.

When they arrived at their office, both of them went to their own  desks. Amanda thought she wanted to continue doing her work about the interview.  The first thing she did was getting some keys to unlock one of her drawers.  However, she was surprised to find out that her drawers were not even locked  at all.

How come my drawers aren't locked?

Then, she remembered that she forgot to lock her drawers the day before.

I forgot to lock my drawers yesterday...

She opened the drawer that she had put the papers about her interview  in. She was shocked to know that the papers were not there.

Where are those papers? I put them right in here!

She became worried. She searched for the papers in the other drawers.  She could not find them.

Damn! Where are they?! I couldn't have lost them! I've been working  on the papers for some time! If I can't find them, all that I've been working  for is worthless!

She looked for the papers on and around her desk. She even looked  for it in her wastepaper basket. However, she could not find them.

Amanda started researching for the papers in her drawers again. While  she was doing that, Caitlin walked by.

"Hey Amanda. Looks like you're looking for something. Can I help?"

Amanda looked at Caitlin for a while.

Caitlin? She wants to help me? What's this, a new helpful Caitlin?

"No, thanks. You don't need to be so helpful today. You were never  nice nor helpful before.. what happened to you today?"

"Oh, well, I just haven't seen you being worried so much like this  before. I just think I wanna help. By the way, I think I want to be a nice  person starting from today. Besides, I'm in a nice mood."

"You wanna be a nice person starting from today? You've gotta be kidding. Come on Caitlin, no jokes right now. I'm looking for some papers that I've been working on about the interview," Amanda exclaimed moodily while she kept looking for the papers.

          "Papers 'bout your interview?"

"Yes. I wrote things like the questions I had asked 'N Sync and the  Backstreet Boys and the answers that they gave me on those papers. I wrote  'BSB and 'N Sync interview' on the top of every paper clearly.. anybody can  read those words even from five metres away." Amanda sighed. "Why am I even  telling you all this? No use anyway. I put the papers in my drawer and now,  they're gone. I don't think I can find the papers at any other place."

"You know what? I think I can help you. I did see Jennifer putting  the papers into her drawer yesterday. As what you said, I can clearly see  the words 'BSB and 'N Sync  interview' from even more than 5 metres away."

         Amanda was surprised. "What?"

"I saw Jennifer putting the papers into her drawer... look, I know  it will be something that's weird and hard for you to believe, but I think  Jennifer stole them from you."

"What? That's ridiculous. She would never do that."

"I don't know, Amanda. It's up to you to believe it or not."

         Caitlin walked away.

She stole my work from me? No way. She'd never do that to me. But...

         Amanda sighed.

Where else could those papers be? Maybe I should go and check...

She went to Jennifer's desk and checked the drawers by herself, as  Jennifer was not at her desk. She found the papers in one of the drawers.  She was shocked and disappointed. By that time, Jennifer came back toher desk with a cup of coffee.

         "Hey, Amanda."

"Jennifer, how could you do this to me. I thought we were friends!"

"What? What do you mean? I don't know what you're talking about."

"Don't fool me. You stole my work from my drawers, right? I can't  believe it. I didn't know how you stole those papers... but I just know that  you did steal them from me. I might forget to lock my drawer yesterday... and I didn't know how you knew I forgot to lock my drawer.  So I guess you took the chance to steal my work. You were always lazy to do your own work, so you decided to steal mine!"

Jennifer was shocked. "Amanda, what are you talking about? You're saying that I stole your work?"

"Yes, and don't you pretend like you don't know about it. I have a witness."

         "Witness? Who?"

"It doesn't matter... this time I trust her anyway. With my papers  being in your drawer, it proves that you did steal my work."

Jennifer checked her drawer. "What? How can the papers be in here?  Look, trust me, I never stole them from you."

"Then how come the papers are in your drawer? They flew into your  drawer by themselves?"

          "I don't know!"

"Don't pretend like you don't know anything! Look, Jennifer, forget  it! You stole my work... if not, the papers wouldn't be in your drawer!""

          "But—"

"No, Jennifer, let's end this conversation! Our friendship is over!"

          Amanda left Jennifer angrily.

"Amanda! You have to believe me! I didn't steal your work! Amanda!"

          Amanda ignored Jennifer.

Urgh... what's heppening here? How can these papers be in my drawer?

           Jennifer sighed.

           Who put these papers here...?

From far, Caitlin was watching. She was conceited.

Thank God... I don't think Amanda mentioned my name... but even is she did, I don't think my plan will be ruined 'cause even if Jennifer knew I was the 'witness', she's too nice to suspect anything. And Amanda didn't  say anything that will ruin my plan... it seems like my plan is going well  for now..
