| quicksand the last thing that you should do |
| these two tracks were performed and recorded at david bowie's 50th birthday party concert...robert smtih was one of the many guests that david bowie invited to perform with him at this concert, including frank black, david grohl, billy corgan and others...robert performed the older david bowie song "quicksand" acoustically, and joined david and his band for some lines in the more recent release "the last thing that you should do." a funny thing about "quicksand" is that robert didn't actually know the correct lyrics...he had learned them years ago when he was younger just by listening to the records, and had just kinda learned them phoenetically...and then when he was invited to perform, bowie provided the lyrics and they weren't the same. according to robert, this was quite funny and he knew he would revert to his version just out of habit. robert also claimed to be surprised that bowie asked him to perform, because--according to smith--he was quite rude to bowie when they had met before, being the young punk that he was... another side note, david bowie's long-time guitarist/side-man reeves gabrels would also strike up a friendship w/robert...eventually leading to some work together on "wrong number," some performances joining the cure on-stage in 1997 shows...and the reeves gabrels track w/robert "yesterday's gone." |
