the cure plays in rome during the kissing tour...

and this recording is a good little set...right in the middle, not great but listenable and enjoyable. all of the instruments are mixed well, the audience is in the mix slightly...but not overwhelming. the overall feel is a bit of distance, the band sounds like it's got some distance between them and the recording equipment.

the band is in good form though...opening songs and normal kissing tour performances are all over the place. "the kiss" and "torture" kick things right off w/energy and movement...and the set-list favors the "kiss me kiss me kiss me" album heavily.

"a strange day" is fine, followed by the "kiss me" era b-side "a japanese dream," and then two more "kiss me" tracks...."catch" and "just like heaven." both sound fresh and new (which they were) and the band plays them well...the crowd is very into them, and "hot hot hot!!!" keeps the dance going.

after two more "kiss me" tracks (the atmospheric "if only tonight we could sleep..." and "like cockatoos") comes a more upbeat one-two singles punch of "the walk" and "inbetween days." both feel good and the band plays well.

it's right back into the "kiss me" album to finish the set (a kinda strange feel) w/"the perfect girl" still being very pop...then into the more meditative "the snakepit" coming next, only to lead into the closing number, "fight." all are performed nicely, but the real fun starts w/the encores that follow...
the first set of encores is kicked off w/"one hundred years" and then "a forest." the kissing tour was really colourful featuring all of the different tracks from the new album...almost like singles, so the encore starting w/"one hundred years" is excellent. and the performance is really good--kinda fresh and powerful since they didn't play it all the time. "a forest" follows "one hundred years" with another great performance. it skitters back and forth with robert's guitar work and drums relentlessly keeping the beat...a good thirteen minutes....

the mood lightens up w/more traditional singles stuff, "close to me" "let's go to bed" and then "why can't i be you?" the first two are somewhat normal with nothing really important to note, fine performances--nothing to mention. what's more interesting is the next song, "why can't i be you?" the song is starting to take off in all sorts of different directions, and the lyrics start changing and robert throws in some interesting lines...lines from "purple haze" and "witchcraft," which make sense--but robert actually throws in the chorus from hall and oates' "out of touch!!"  very funny and worth an extra listen or two just for that!! the cure don't really have a medley working yet, but you can see/hear it developing here towards the end of the kissing tour...only to be more fully realized on the prayer tour in 1989 performances.

"one more time" is a nice change of mood/pace, kinda cool mixed in with the up singles--and then "charlotte sometimes" leads back into more familiar territory...the cure classics, "boys don't cry," "10.15 saturday night" and "killing an arab." all are well done, good stuff. the feedback and noise from the end of "killing an arab" leads not into "forever," but into a cool performance of "pornography."

the night ends w/"faith," featuring some nice six-string bass work...and extra lyrics--not all of them are easily understandable, but one of the more easily heard lyrics is "i need you here..."  it's very good.

given that the band turns in a really good performance, this one is recommended for trading--the sound quality keeps this one from being a real must-have show/set, but the recording is still enjoyable for everything it offers...great songs/set-list, and excellent performances--worth finding and having.
