the cure plays dallas in 1996...

and unfortunately, this recording just isn't up to speed...which is a let down, since this was one of the shows that i was lucky enough to see. the sound itself isn't bad--the mix of instruments and vocals are fine, but this was obviously taken from a tape source...because the recording speeds  up gradually (so gradually that it's hardly noticeable), but then slows back down very quickly--very noticeable and distracting!! this happens frequently--
more noticeable ones are marked to the left in red text...but even so, this is the only known recording to exist--even w/traders who thought that they had different sources, the two recordings i picked up are exactly the same--detectable by the warped playing speeds...

an unfortunate thing, because the band sounds quite good and on top of things...good performances really. after "fascination street," robert says something about the songs from "disintegration" "dragging him back years and years," and then they play "lullaby" and "pictures of you" back to back.

"this is a lie" is really nice, w/only some minor speed flaws, but "just like heaven" has more noticeable ones....as does "jupiter crash," starting at the very beginning. good performances lost   =\

robert is quite talkative, saying that he's "trying to get engrossed" before "round and round and round." and then talking about how it seems that what he wants to sing are songs from "disintegrtion" and "wild mood swings," before a good performance of "lovesong." it actually sneaks in w/out much of a taping problem too!!
"mint car" gets a good audience scream after robert's "the sun is up, i'm so happy i could scream" lyric...excellent version, but flawed recording.

and everything seems to be really good--upbeat takes of the singles, energetic--but most are flawed  =\  "prayers for rain" has a nice long "rain" close to the end, w/robert letting it fall and then come back again--an excellent performance, not totally lost.
"inbetween days" has the slightest of cuts on the intro, but comes thru w/out any real noticeable tape flaws...because it's so short!! "from the edge of the deep green sea" isn't so short and suffers a few lapses, but robert also sings "put your laser pointer in the sky," instead of "put your hands in the sky..." the same problem hits "bare," because it's so long and the tape problem keeps popping up  =\  which is just too bad...the performances all seem to be really good as far as what you can make out from the recordings, some excellent sounds and playing. "disintegration" seems to come thru mostly unaffected, and it's a really good version--good stuff.

the boys come back out w/robert saying "thank you very much!" w/lots of enthusiasm--and into "dressing up" which gets done before any more taping problems come up, a good start. "hot hot hot!!!" follows right after, robert plays around w/the last chorus...and the tape/speed problem is only slight--close to the end...

"close to me" features some odd, funky guitars at the start...robert and/or perry musta been messing about having fun. no major problems, and robert then says something (can't quite make out exact words) talking about himself and being "very professional, that's me" and also being "fucking stupid," then trying to see the right color and singing "let's go to bed." it comes thru w/out much taping problems too! robert declares that there is an "idiot dancing contest" to be won, and that there's only four minutes left w/"why can't i be you?" "witchcraft" "young at heart" and "the lovecats" all pop up--but so does the taping/speed flaw!!

"three imaginary boys" and "boys don't cry" are good and come thru w/out any real distractions...and (very big shock really) "10.15 saturday night" and "killing an arab" actually don't have any real recording problems either--both are quite good, and that could have close the night...

but the band came back out again--starting w/a good performance of "a forest" (that goes w/out any real taping flaws) and into an extra-long/cool breakdown towards the end, w/slow stuff and then breakout parts leading to "forever," w/a nice driving (not fast or complex--just good simple movement) beat pounding away...then eventually it's just robert singing w/simon alone playing simple long/sustained bass notes, and then back again w/pounding/falling drums--then faster and over the edge--fucking excellent curestuff!!

this surely woulda been a must have show w/a decent recording--the performances are excellent and full of energy and the band is in great form throughout!! but the taping/speed flaws that appear early on and keep appearing again and again are too distracting...
making this one for absolutely mad curefans only.
