| the cure play in brussels to support "seventeen seconds." this recording is quite good, not radio broadcast quality (or at least top radio quality) and some noticeable tape noise/hiss--but solid and decent...good mix of instruments all the way around, you can kinda hear the distance from stage/pa to recording equipment when robert starts to sing...but that's very minor--this is solid. and as the boys start "a reflection," you can hear someone in the crowd yell "sit down!" to someone else...this is actually a complete live take on it, and then right into "play for today." it's good and strong like most live performances of the time...there is a slight slight flaw after the last vocal, the recording sounds like it slips (tape/player flaw) and slows down for a second--but it's not too bad... the crowd reacts loudly to "three imaginary boys" and "fire in cairo," it sounds like they'll go mad for anything cure..."fire in cairo" has a few more tape-slips/flaws, if you're not paying close attention they slip right by--but they're in the mix. |
| "in your house" comes next, a change in mood from the upbeat version of "fire in cairo," but that's a good thing..."10.15 saturday night" follows and gets the audience up and going--clap clap clap during the song, it's good. the next song is "m," which is starts w/simon's bass line instead of robert's guitar...it's got a nice feel to it. the crowd sings along to "accuracy" pretty loudly in places, enthusiastic...you can hear the tape change after "accuracy" and before "jumping someone else's train" where "at night" must have gotten lost--a slight blip. the "jumping someone else's train"/"another journey by train" momentum is always cool...and "grinding halt" keeps it up, and flows right into a good (not specially noteworthy) version of "a forest." that, in turn, flows right into a nice version of "seventeen seconds." this isn't a bad recording at all, not a bad selection for trades--but given that there are some other really good picks for 1980 shows/performances, this is just a middle-of-the-road kinda set...far from a must-have recording, it's just ok--a good listen if you have it. |
