the cure plays toronto during the dream tour 2000...

and this is a really good recording, not sounboard or radio quality, but a strong audience recording--good mix of all the instruments/sounds and vocals--and the lacking bottom (a slight complaint--very slight!!) can be fixed w/your stereo...so this is a really really good one!!

and that said, the cure opens the show w/the familiar songs..."out of this world," "watching me fall," "want" and "fascination street." "out of this world" has the required shimmery guitar sounds (captured well here) and mood..."watching me fall" has the more aggressive guitars and mood, fully realized w/a good mix of everything (including the electronic/synth effects) and strong vocals...

then it's "thank you....and hello again," after "watching me fall," as they start "want." "want" and "fascination street" both feature good work, strong performances--not at all lacking in energy or emotion, both are good. "open" comes quickly after...robert sings this one very well and it turns out to be a really good one.

the change of mood comes w/"the loudest sound." before the vocal, some audience chatter comes in just a touch, but it's gone quickly--which is a relief, as most ot the subtle little things come across really well--and you can hear them all on this recording--nice. "maybe someday" comes next, and is a good clean perfomance...really solid and w/some pop to it.
"shake dog shake" is really excellent, the band plays well but robert's vocals really push this one over the top...he's really laying into them, and that helps push it to another level. "from the edge of the deep green sea" takes advantage of that emotion and momentum, keeping it pushing...and robert again stays on top of things vocally and doesn't fall, he's in really good voice (even though some of the "miles and miles" lines at the end get lost)...top notch, followed by the jump in moods..."inbetween days," which is always a bright pop single in the middle of the darker night. good, if not remarkable.

"sinking" follows (the bookends of "the head on the door" back-to-back...interesting) and is great, lots of sounds working together, back and forth...synths/bass/drums/and careful guitar...nice! a great sounding "prayers for rain" comes right after, and it keeps the feel and drive going...darker, and maybe angrier--finished and punctuated by robert holding out the last "rain" for a long long time and it kills. it's right on and the crowd goes mad...

"one hundred years" keeps the mood dark, and angry...excellent stuff, leading right into a pounding performance of "end." this one is also one of the performances w/the "she stopped loving me...i was none of those things" choruses...and...you can hear some great noisy guitars w/this recording, cool. all around good vocals too--making "end" really a keeper tonight.

"39" follows right after, and actually has really similar strong points--pounding drums/bass, squealing guitars and robert's vocals--which seem to be super and fully realized this night...another keeper performance, "39" stomps! and "bloodflowers" follows to end the set...very gentle stuff at the start, a swift change, but good, and the song works completely...

the cure comes back to encore w/"there is no if," which is nice, but nothing spectacular here..."trust" (the next song) is much better w/sweeping synths and grand scope, a nice feeling...followed by another song w/the same qualities, "plainsong." and it sounds way too good--too good, excellent.  "disintegration" follows, and pounds away insistently...it's pretty strong, and like most of the night, robert's vocals stay strong and hard--no falling apart, great form.

another encore holds a real gem, an atmospheric performance of "all cats are grey." amazingly good, followed by "faith," which includes some extra lyrics about "waiting for years and years..." (more are included that i've not deciphered yet)....and "misunderstood." not overwhelming, but strong.

an encore full of singles closes the night, a nice "lovesong, " followed by "play for today." "just like heaven" is full of energy and all, featuring the "you you you!" last chorus...and "a forest" ends the show, w/a good sharp performance...simon's bass jumps in and sounds clean, and everything kills from that moment on...nothing outrageous, just a solid version of another cure classic.

another great recording from the dream tour, not soundboard or radio broadcast quality--but a keeper just the same. given that it's one of many really good dream tour recordings, it's hard to put must have labels on anything less than stellar shows/recordings....but this is excellent--very very listenable and enjoyable. highly recommended!!
