| the cure brings the dream tour to rome... this recording is kinda quiet and somewhat lacking for some low end/bass sounds...however...if you've got a good "extended bass" or "bass surround" sound, or even if you can turn up the bass a few notches--this one is pretty cool. the audience clapping and other noises intrude every so often, but all things considered--this is a pretty good listen w/a good mix overall. things start off w/"out of this world" and some added handclaps from the crowd around the recording equipment...but not too overbearing. "watching me fall" gets a warm response and added fuel, the band seems to feed off of the crowd's energy really well--an excellent performance! "want" has more handclaps, but they die out eventually...it's also very very strong. "fascination street" and "open" also seem to be powered along by lots of energy and drive...both excellent. the first real change in mood comes w/"the loudest sound," and it's nice...but right back to more uptempo stuff as "maybe someday" follows it. both "maybe someday" and the next song, "shake dog shake" work well--good performances, great momentum...and then "sinking" makes the night go grey for awhile... "from the edge of the deep green sea" is another strong one (the band seems to be very much in a good groove, and robert stays on top w/some great vocals too)...and then "inbetween days" comes next. there is a small piece of the intro missing, and then also a pretty severe change in sound...the recording becomes seriously muffled! this also stays thru the first half of "if only tonight we could sleep..." before returning to normal. |

| the return to form for the recording is fortunate, because an excellent performance of "the kiss" is next in line...squealing guitars and powerful bass/drum work, with a top vocal from robert--super!! "prayers for rain" is good (even w/some mistakes from roger early on in the song--oops!) and then another powerful song/performance, "one hundred years." it builds and builds until robert is almost screaming "it feels like one hundred years...." "39" comes next, and is just as strong really...and "bloodflowers" ends the first set nicely--despite a few lines here and there being sung by an over-involved crowd--kinda like a backing vocal. but even so, "bloodflowers" shines thru very well. the band comes back out for a "disintegration" themed encore first...starting things out w/"plainsong." it's got a great sweeping sound to it, a great listen--followed by the more meditative "the same deep water as you," which also works well, w/the different lines passing in and out of the song...excellent, and the recording is nice as well. "disintegration" finishes the first encore, very solid--a keeper. the second encore features "m," (which is ok, nothing remarkable) "play for today," (lots of singing on the keyboard lines--good version) "just like heaven" and "a forest." "just like heaven" is good w/lots of fun and "you you you" during the last chorus...and "a forest" sounds nice and clean w/robert's guitars skittering across every so often, and simon's bass cutting thru the bottom of the mix...nice vocal too. after leaving and coming back on, robert says something about this (meaning the show in rome) being the end of their european tour, and they go into "faith," w/extra lyrics from robert--most are stuff i can't make out easily, but he repeates "there's nothing ever left...but faith..." during the end...and then the cure plays two more to finish the night, "10.15 saturday night" and "killing an arab." this is a really good show/recording, some excellent stuff!! the performances are really some of the best, probably because the crowd was really involved--and because it was the last date of the european leg of the dream tour. some great stuff, the recording itself isn't perfect--it's got a few flaws--but this is one to get. either a very highly recommended show/recording...or simply a must-have. |
