The Truth Remains

Justin stood akwardly in the door way of the hospital room, unsure of what to do. He just
starred at the small fragile figure lieing in the hospital bed. She was hooked up to tons of
different machines. Justin could hear them beeping. He couldnt see how anyone could
sleep with all that noise, yet she did.
But hearing the beeping and the rustling of the nurses outside the room werent the worst.
No, it was the smell.
The smell you always smelled in hospitals. It brought back unpleasant memories of his
childhood, when he had to stay over night in the hospital after having his tonsils taken
out.
Just as Justin was debating wether to go in the room or to just leave, her eyes
opened. They came to rest on Justin.
You can come in, you know, Lucy spoke out loud.
Justin slowly walked into the room, taking a seat in the chair by the bed. He was unsure
of what to say or do. He was afraid to touch her, for fear hed hurt her more.
Before he could think of what to do any more, Lucy took ahold of his hand.
Justin could only stare at their hands. He couldnt bring himself to look up at her, he
didnt want to see the disappointment in her eyes that it took him so long to come visit
her.
Justin, look at me, Lucy said. When Justin continued to stare at their hands, she said,
Am I that ugly, that you cant even look at me?
Justin looked up at her in shock, but for the first time, he took a good look at her.
Lucy had lost a lot of weight since he had last seen her. She had big bags under her eyes.
Then worst of all, from the chemo thearpy, she had lost all of her beautiful long blonde
hair.
No, Justin choked out. He cleared his voise and repeated clearily, No. Youre still the
most beautiful woman Ive ever seen. Even more beautifuler than before.
Lucy smiled. Then her face turned to pain.
Whats wrong, are you ok? Do you need me to get a nurse? Justin asked fanactly.
No, Lucy shook her head. I just got a horrible headache. Ill be fine.
Justin let out a sigh of relief. Im sorry it took so long for me to come see you. You
know I rather had been here with you.
I know, Lucy paused. Justin, I want you to always remember that I love you.
Of course. Youll always be here to remind me if I forget too.
Justin, just remember. Never forget that. Ill always be with you, even if you dont see
me.
Ok, Justin said, starring at her confused.
Can you sing to me? Lucy asked, gripping his hand tightly.
Of course, Justin said, as he softly started singing her favorite song.

There a thousand words that I could say to make you come home, yeah
Seems so long ago you walked away and left me alone
And I remember what you said to me, you were acting so strange
And maybe I was too blind to see that you needed a change
Was it something I said to make you turn away
To make you walk out and leave me cold
If I could just find away to make it so that you were right here, right now
Ive been sitting here
Cant get you off my mind
Im trying my best to be a man and be strong
I drove myself insane wishing I could touch you face
But the truth remains, youre
Gone

Lucys grip on Justins hand had loosened. Her hand layed limply in Justins hand. Her
eyes were closed.
It was then that Justin noticed that she was not breathing.
Lucy? Justin whispered. Lucy!

Justin jerked awake, sitting up in a cold sweat, breathing heavily. He then sighed with
relief, as he fell back on his pillows, closing his eyes.
It was just a nightmare, Justin mumbled to himself. He the reached over to the
otherside of his bed, where Lucy layed.
Justins eyes popped open, as he relized, that the truth still remained.....
She was still gone.
