'Ship graveyard destroys beach'

This story is true. 'A secluded stretch of beach on Darwin Harbour is a dumping ground for the half burnt hulks of seized illegal Indonesian vessels….. The beach was littered with debris from the hulks, including countless rusted metal rivets, nails and other sharp metal objects. The hulks dominate the foreshore with large rusted, fuel tanks lying alongside the charred wooden wrecks'. But a spokesman for Fisheries Minister, Mick Palmer, said a permit had been issued for the hulks to be destroyed at the site. Five more hulks were to be burnt tonight at the site. The beach was previously regarded as one of Darwin's few areas of foreshore not covered by mangroves.

'Lord Mayor's olympic hope shattered…'

Lord Mayor George Brown's application to run a leg in the Torch Relay was rejected because he was a politician. Oh dear. Meanwhile a crowd of 25 000 people is expected to be at the lighting of the cauldron at Mindil Beach on Thursday night. I fearlessly predict now that Friday's record of the crowd will be 25 000.

'East Pt wallabies disappear'

Don’t you just love wildlife management programs. Several years ago Darwin City Council believed there were too many wallabies in East Point reserve. So a management plan was introduced to bring numbers down to manageable levels. So now numbers have reduced to between 200 and 320, down from 700-1 100 in May 1995 causing some concern. The survey suggested dogs may be dispersing the wallabies. On a point of language I didn’t know dispersing was a synonym for killing.

'He's 120 and still not out…'

'If Juan Pedro Ramas is right, yesterday was his 120th birthday and he is the world's oldest person'. He has a passport from Cuba which says he was born on June 24, 1880, in Puerto Rico. But the Guinness Book of Records is still not sure seeking further evidence before accepting his claim. What do they want - his mother to verify his age. Bloody dorks.
