Queensland issues a challenge to the Territory
Beware of late hatching turtles

Queensland has threatened to take over from the Northern Territory as the danger location of Australia. The NT News reports that a 5 year old in Cairns died after being stung by a box jellyfish, following hot on the heels of a near-tragedy when a 12 year old was stung near Townsville. Also reported was the shocking death toll of 22 from the Brisbane heatwave.

And now it appears as though a Queensland researcher has come up with a unique way of forecasting cyclones. In the afternoon e-mail headlines sent around by the ABC, there is the story of turtles hatching late near Bundaberg supposedly due to a mild summer. But Col Limpus of the Environment Department is quoted 'I guess the one concern is that the longer the eggs are in the sand, the higher the risk that we could get a cyclone come along and cause some major erosion down the coast.'

The NT response

No more flying spuds, mozzie plagues, monster cods, horny crocs - well at least for February with 7000 US soldiers set to 'invade' Darwin. Not even playing games this time, just here for R & R. At least we will be safe and Ansell will be making a fortune.

And with that announcement, there is even concern for wildlife in the news. 'Fears for whale off Darwin coast' is the headline on page 5 of the NT News page 5 with sightings of a black whale off suburban beaches. The poor whale is considered likely to be sick or injured.

A true story - quoted from NT and Beyond - page 4 NT News.

'A man brought before Darwin Magistrate's Court yesterday after a couple of alleged disturbances and assaults said his real name was James Dean, at the age of one he had been stolen from his mother Goldie Hawn and was from South Africa having appeared in the film The Power Of One. Magistrate Dick Wallace declined to give him bail and ordered a mental health report'. If only he had been sent to court in Hollywood.
