NT News Comment
Money and the Commoner

What could you do with $4m? Perhaps you could spend $700,000 on a dispute with a garbage contractor (Darwin City Council with a garbage contractor - Northern Territory News page 1) and then maybe $3.3m building a memorial playground to Princess Diana (page 2). Or maybe not.

Why?

Celine Dion has issued a statement saying she ISN'T pregnant (page 3). Does this mean Ugly Bob (of South Park fame) has a problem?

Unnatural pests

The Territory is not only a place where the natural world conquers all, it also attracts its fair share of unnatural rogues. Seems as though it is no longer safe to go to the letterbox (page 4). Not berms with French accents but British and Canadian lottery ticket scams.

The natural world, however, had another triumph with a landslip behind Government House yesterday (page 3). If only I had $4m.....

Encouragement Award

Richard Earle summed up the true meaning of encouragement in reporting on the hard-fought Waratahs flogging of Wanderers in the NTFL league game yesterday (page 39) - 'Encouragingly Wanderers scored in every quarter'.

As an added encouragement the NTFL scoreboard on the same page gave Wanderers 60 points for their 5 goals and 4 behinds. Perhaps the NTFL should join in the spirit and award Wanderers with 8 points a goal and 5 points a behind for the rest of the season.

Alas, no encouragement for the Wanderers reserves - they only scored one goal in the whole game and only got 6 points for their goal!

Tennant and District Times - The wait is worth it
Strange bedfellows

There is more to Tennant Creek than ........... Put this event in your diary now. The Tennant Creek Gun Club and the Tennant Creek Go-Karting Club are having their combined annual general meeting at the Bowling Club on 30 January 2000 at 6pm (page 14). Conjures up lots of bizarre images and undoubtedly makes for an interesting night.

If you are wondering about the wait - the paper comes out on Friday but takes three days to get to Darwin - bring on the rail express.
