Northern Territory News headlines

'I didn't swim at Olympics'

Will we ever be able to trust the Channel 8 news again. Just a few days after losing Theona Mitaros as nightly news co-reader, the other half of the duo was stood down from the news after admitting he has never been an Olympic swimmer. Apparently David Fidler has finally admitted the fact in an interview with The Australian newspaper, correcting a story that he had allowed to remain uncorrected since 1988.

'George watching footy in Sth Africa';

Remember the fact finding planning mission to Cape Town. Well on Saturday they watched the footy, Sunday they upheld the Sabbath and on Tuesday they visited the botanic gardens. Only on Monday did they meet the Cape Town harbour developers. Our wonderful mayor George Brown was quoted 'I have 48 weeks leave owing me, and I have only taken 42 days. A few days rest at the public cost doesn't worry me'.

'Woman walks 25km in the desert for help'

They breed 'em tough in the Territory. An Alice Springs woman, believed to be in her 50s, walked 25km with no water, multiple fractures to her right arm and bone protruding from her thumb to seek help for her two companions after their four-wheel-drive rolled 60km east of Kulgera. The other two occupants were a 32 year old man with broken ribs and an injured shoulder and a 62 year old man who had serious head injuries and was unable to walk.

'NT beer price up as fuel cost bites'

It had to happen, rising fuel prices causing beer prices to increase. And how would this affect the drinkers - Tim O'Shea - 'It won't stop me drinking, but it is going to hurt my pocket' - James Hogan - 'I don’t think it's right. I don’t understand where the increase is going - and Ottavio Gherdevish who described the rise in beer prices as a 'disgrace'.

'Bad meat for flood victims'

'Beswick residents are eating condemned meat and cooking on barbeques licked by dogs after floods destroyed their community, it was claimed yesterday. Local store manager Laurie Hughes said children were playing in fetid water and mosquitoes were invading the community, 400km south-east of Darwin. He said "It looks as though an atomic bomb's hit it"'. Another day in the life of indigenous Territorians.

'Taxi owner to stand for mayor'

Another quality politician. Alderman Vaughan Casey will challenge Mayor Annette Burke at the local government elections in May. Mr Casey is a taxi-fleet operator and is calling for a hospital for Palmerston (to serve it's massive 22,000 population - I trust it will be built with rates money) and to break its sister city relationship with Kupang in favour of links with other Australian cities. He is happy to be re-elected as Alderman if he misses out on Mayor.

'Bare buttocks player banned'

Wayne Worden was suspended for three games for baring his buttocks at the grand final (see yesterday's stories).
