Northern Territory News headlines

'Gun terror for woman driver’

Shades of the USA in Darwin yesterday as a huge manhunt was launched for a gunman who aimed at a woman as she drove into Hidden Valley. 'Police said three shots from a .22 rifle may have been fired in a wild spree by three youths around the motor sports complex'. However, no youths, cars or guns were found by police.

‘Fuel 'to rise by 2.7c' in NT'

Remember little Johnny's prophetic, sorry I mean pathetic, words in April - petrol prices will not rise as a result of the GST. 'Territory petrol prices will rise by up to 2.7c per litre when the GST is introduced, Territory MHR Warren Snowdon claimed yesterday'. With petrol prices now over 90c per litre across the Territory, the cut in excise of 6.7c coupled with a fuel rebate of either 1c or 2c per litre depending on location will not be sufficient to offset the GST. 'Mr Snowdon tipped the Darwin pump price would rise 2.2c per litre to 97.1c per litre. The price in Katherine would rise 1.7c to 113.8c per litre, in Alice Springs by 2.1c to $1.05c per litre and in Barrow Creek by 3c to $121.4 (sic) per litre.' Residents of Barrow Creek must have got a shock at that price.

'Mozzie crater traps filled in'

A $1.6m project to fill in old bomb craters has begun in order to decrease the breeding grounds for mosquitoes close to Darwin. Around 800 barramundi and jewfish that had been caught in the craters after the wet season were relocated to a nearby creek.

‘Korean naval officer in pool scare'

'A Korean navy officer was saved from drowning in a Darwin hotel swimming pool by two doctors strolling past and the prompt action of staff'. Lots of guffaws in the office today.

And from the ABC internet news
'Push for Territory Mueseum (sic) to be more productive'

How to say absolutely nothing in 25 words or more. The Minister for Arts and Museums, Peter Adamson reportedly responded to a question in Parliament this week about the museum as follows: "the board needs to be proactive, we have a great asset let's sell it more, let's sing its praise because it is a great asset but at the same time let's go out and see if we can attract other things into this organisation to make it even better"
