'Floods: worst still to come - more rains on way'
And on and on it goes. Today forecasters from the Weather Bureau are suggesting that the worst is yet to come for remote flood-stricken communities across the Top End with heavy rainfall predicted for the rest of the week. Rivers are being monitored in Borroloola, Maranboy, Timber Creek and Katherine and evacuations continue at Daly River. Beswick, which flooded badly several weeks ago was again put on flood alert. Daly River residents are expected to be homeless for around three to four weeks. And if the floods aren't bad enough, colds and diarrhoea have begun to hit those evacuated from the Daly River community.
'$7m was on the cards'
A prediction that a man would come into lots of money without hard work or inheritance appears to have come true with a New South Welshmen winning $7m in the $2 jackpot lottery. It was the last in a series of predictions the clairvoyant made, all others having come true. Fetch me this clairvoyant now.
'Fuel poised to pass $1 mark'
NT Motor Trades Association executive director Graeme Bevis reckons that Darwin petrol prices may soar past the $1 mark due to another 2c increase last week. Darwin prices are now as high as 98.9c/litre with Alice Springs residents paying up to $1.05/l.
'Tourist arrested over lizard lunch'
A German tourist was arrested for the callous killing of a water monitor at a major attraction in Litchfield National Park because he wanted to eat it. The water monitor had been a regular visitor to Buley Rockholes for several years. The lizard was killed by rock. Perhaps our wonderful CLP could introduce mandatory stoning for senseless killing of protected species. The tourist was due for a court appearance today. Any bets on the likely sentence.
'Road train burns'
There may be the odd dirty bum up in the Top End after a road train trailer laden with nappies, toilet paper and sugar was destroyed by fire yesterday.
NT and Beyond
This column reports more cane toad disaster with an Alice Springs resident spotting numerous cane toads on the Stuart Highway near Dunmarra. Apparently the man is a regular traveller along the track and has never seen them this far south.
Another candidate for the Darwin awards
Three circus tigers escaped from a circus in Poland today. A veterinarian was called in with police to help tranquilise the animal. However during the chase, the tiger took exception to the vet's efforts to fire the dart gun and police, while trying to shoot the tiger, shot the vet. The vet died on the way to hospital. Shortly after police also shot the tiger.
