'Pack up your woolies, warmer weather on way'
It seems that only yesterday that the Weather Bureau was expecting below average temperatures to continue for a few days. However, the good news now is that temperatures are forecast to rise this weekend. Senior forecaster Ashley Patterson was quoted 'Winds will move from the east which will bring in moisture and cause a rise in temperature'. Yesterday's maximum was 27C after a chilly low of 15C. And indeed it did rain in Darwin, albeit very lightly, this evening.
'Vegie prices to keep rising'
Yesterday prices seemed to rise as the article was being written. Today, a Woolworths spokesman was reported as saying that prices would continue to rise in the short term. Yesterday prices of tomatoes were quoted at $8.99kg and $9.99kg for Roma and vine-ripened varieties. Today prices the same prices were quoted as $7.99kg and $8.99kg.
'Anger over backyard fire hazards'
More of the same, I hear you say. Yes another fire was lit, this time in suburban Ludmillla, roaring through 60ha of grassland with thick smoke blanketing one of the major thoroughfares out of Darwin for more than 30 minutes.
'Head lice drive busy dad crazy'
With all our exotic nasties up here, you could be forgiven for thinking that we don’t have the regular pests of elsewhere in Australia. Well today's pest is nits with a Darwin father lashing out at schools over the problem. His daughter has had nits four times now with the school ringing him twice to ask him to take her home. As a single working father he has been unable to do so.
'APEC cost NT $2m: Martin'
Did any of you hear about the recent APEC trade ministers conference which was held in Darwin. Don’t worry neither did we because there was an 85cm crocodile in a popular swimming hole. The Labor Opposition claims that the hosting of the event cost $2m while the NT Government is claiming it cost $400,000. Either way it appears to be a complete waste of money.
Global news
'Beaver leaving ridicule' - page 2
'Two-faced kitten dies' - page 3
The lead international stories for today were of a Philadelphia school's board deciding to change the school's name from Beaver College because 'it elicits ridicule in the form of derogatory remarks pertaining to the rodent, the TV show Leave It to Beaver and the vulgar reference to the female anatomy'. A committee has been formed to find a new name. Look for the new name by 2003.
In New York, Image, the two-faced kitten, died on Saturday. 'The kitten, with one head and brain but mirror sets of eyes, noses and mouths, apparently died because it got too cold after its mother rejected it'. Boo-hoo boo-hoo.
