Northern Territory News headlines

'Flood havoc - 600 left homeless: more rain on way'

'Hundreds of people were homeless last night as former Cyclone Steve cut a swath of destruction across the Top End. A cyclone warning was cancelled for Darwin yesterday morning, but not before the low had dumped 160mm of rain - half the monthly average - in less than three days. And the deluge is expected to continue until next week' says the paper. Two Aboriginal communities were evacuated with another couple under threat. Apart from that a few trees came down, many roads remain cut but pretty much a typical Top End wet.

When a loser is always a winner
'By-election is poll on jail laws: Burke'

Quoting again from the paper 'Chief Minister Denis Burke vowed yesterday not to abolish mandatory sentencing laws if the CLP loses next weekend's Port Darwin by-election. But he declared a CLP win would be a ringing endorsement of the tough laws'.

'Lindy finds a spot minus dingoes'

Lindy Chamberlain-Creighton spoke to an audience of 300 society women in Sydney and was quoted 'If you're having a problem making a friend, I guess go out and buy a dog'. A dingo perhaps.

Another example of global values
'$9.1m job payout' and
'Flooding: fears for 15 000'

A bit more of the same. While many flood victims in Mozambique go without food and clean water, a US federal jury has awarded a woman $9.1m because she was laid off after having children.

'Turner thrilled for happy Mick'

Hasn’t this made your day. Today's Catherine Zeta-Jones story is that Kathleen Turner has given her blessing to the marriage of Michael Douglas and Zeta-Jones because she has never seen him that happy.

'Intruder upsets Yates'

A man has been sectioned under mental health laws after Paula Yates was confronted by an intruder in her home. Irony in action.
