Northern Territory News headlines

'Flood alert for Top End'

Cyclone Steve crossed the coast at Bing Bong in the NT yesterday with winds of up to 120km/h. Now it has been downgraded to a tropical low but is expected to result in heavy rain and cause widespread flooding in the Top End. The cyclone may form for a third time when it reaches the Joseph Bonaparte Gulf sometime on Friday. The heavy cloud cover for Darwin with plenty of rain means that it may well be one of the coolest cities in the country today - a rare experience indeed.

'By George, what a whopper'

'That notorious barrage bandit, George Voukolos jnr, has done it again at his favourite fishing spot'. He fished all night and caught a 122cm long and 23kg barramundi, which is splashed all over the front page, and at least 11 other fish. Hope he has a lot of mates.

'Burke cuts loose ties'

Politics reached a step lower today with the Chief Minister reportedly having sent a memo to public servants urging less wearing of ties. Apparently junior staff are feeling intimidated by senior staff wearing ties. I'm just waiting for the national advertisements to explain this policy.

'Ian get back to basics'

Today's Port Darwin candidate profile is Ian Fraser of the ALP. Anti-social behaviour is his main issue with policies to combat it including night patrols, hot spot policing and the moving of the St Vincent de Paul emergency hostel. His other issues are planning, traffic congestion and the impact on Territorians of the GST. So far, the only candidate to articulate any policy. Bravo. Only problem is that he needs an 18% swing to win the seat.

Two examples of Global Values
#1

Page 12 features one of the more unfortunate pairings of headlines in a long while. Story 1 - 'Mozambique in a plea for help' and story 2 - 'Dion sues paper for $32m'. Thousands dead and a million homeless and a country crying for aid versus a lawsuit about a newspaper article claiming Canadian Celine Dion was pregnant with twins. To put the stories in perspective, the USA government has so far given $15m in aid to Mozambique.

#2 - 'No breast milk may save bubs'

Researcher Ruth Nduati et al has found that the number of children who get AIDS from their mothers could drop by 40 per cent if infected women avoided breastfeeding. This study was based on a live test of the groups hypothesis. Something is horribly wrong in terms of priorities/morals here.
