Northern Territory News headlines

'Alimah here to share her vision'

A special treat for Darwin residents with Miss Botswana, Alimah Issacs visiting the Territory. She is here to give Darwin high school students motivational talks on subjects such as racism, suicide and AIDS. She has obviously studied the quotes of Malcolm Fraser, saying yesterday 'Life is difficult, that is the reality'.

'Ch 8 pays out Fidler'

Remember David Fidler, the former Channel 8 newsreader who had fibbed about his (non) appearance at the Mexico Games in 1968. Well an unfair dismissal claim against Channel 8 has been settled. The associated cartoon is a gem - One of Fidler's mates asking whether he was given a gold watch? - "no", Fidler replies, "a bronze".

'Bum' puppet show TV ads banned'

In the same week as a WOG numberplate gets banned a television advertising campaign for the 'Bugalugs Bum Thief' show has been banned from childrens TV because of the word BUM. The book is a children's bestseller but that is still no good for the Federation of Australian Commercial Television Stations. "It's, um a bummer", a spokeswoman for the show said. "Our prime audience is six year olds and we can't show it at their prime time because of the rating". Bum, bum, bum, bum, bum………….

'Mozzies prefer pregnant women'

Never go out at dusk without a pregnant woman by your side. That seems to be the message coming out of the University of Durham where researchers have discovered that pregnant women are more likely to attract mosquitoes. Apparently the women tend to breathe more rapidly, causing chemicals in breath which attract mosquitoes to be more prevalent and they also tend to be hotter causing their body to release more insect-attracting chemicals.

'Breast touched: Major fined $800'

I must admit that I was, am still are, a critic of Mr Burke's dishonourable comment on the corruptjudiciary. However another example has come up which
adds some credibility to his comments. 'A Pakistani army officer found guilty of assaulting a young shop assistant in Darwin was fined $800 yesterday'. No conviction was recorded because he might lose pension fund entitlements, be charged with bringing the Pakistani Army into disrepute etc etc etc… The man was found guilty and should receive the same sentence as anyone else would have and that probably means receiving a conviction and possibly even jail. The young woman understandably was distraught. The magistrate should be relieved of his duties.
