Northern Territory News headlines

'Darwin demand hots up for winter woolies'

'Bring out the woollies, the beanies and the pyjamas. Sales of warm clothing have taken off in Darwin as the Top End shivers through its coolest week so far this year'. For those outside of the Territory, you might find it difficult to understand how a 16C minimum is really really cold. Some wag in the letters page even suggested that the Council install heaters in the mall. And in case you were wondering the maximum was a cool 28C.

'Nitschke planning ship die clinic'

'Right-to-die doctor Phillip Nitschke is considering launching an off-shore euthanasia clinic for use by the terminally ill'. If it was to go ahead he would site it at a potentially high-use location - say the Gold Coast or Florida. For those of us who get seasick in a bath this sounds like a fair alternative if ever we were stuck on an eight day cruise.

'$2.4m road to escape flood threat'

Yet another joy of Territory life is under threat from the humourless bastards that plan our roads. A 3km section of the Stuart Highway in Katherine is to be duplicated but at a level higher than the existing road. It will enable an escape route to higher ground during a flood.

'Fancy dog in your meat pie'

Meat pies filled with dog, offal filled sausages, artificially coloured prawns and palm oil in your ice-cream. Yummo. The Australian Consumers' Association is warning that this might be a reality under proposed deregulation of food labelling by the Australia New Zealand Food Authority. Could, however, provide a solution for residents of Darwin and surrounds fed up with all the stray dogs around.
