Eve Arden played a fun-loving but sometimes frazzled English teacher, Connie Brooks, a role for which she won an Emmy. Teachers across the country related to Miss Brooks. Arden received thousands of letters from teachers relating their own frustrating experiences. She was even offered teaching jobs, which she turned down. She did sometimes speak at PTA meetings. The bashful biology teacher Phillip Boynton, whom Miss Brooks loved to chase, was played by Jeff Chandler. Osgood Conklin, Madison High's harried principal, was played by veteran performer Gale Gordon. Leonard Smith played the school idiot, "Stretch" Snodgrass. Jane Morgan appeared as Mrs. Davis, the owner of the apartment building. Richard Crenna played Walter Denton, the show's "Henry Aldrich". Gloria McMillan played Harriet, the principal's daughter. The show was written by Al Lewis, who often directed.
