"MY FRIEND MALISSA"
(By: Jenny Wren)

My sensitive friend was blind since birth
her thirty-one years chocked full of mirth
Malissa loved sounds, tried taping each one
collecting her "sounds" is her hobby of fun

Malissa went outside one night in the rain
this sensitive lady, to "tape" once again
Malissa was found in the early dawns cast
in cold stare of death from the storm past

There lay her tape player by Malissas side
lying there in the mud, where my friend died
Collecting her sounds to play oer and oer
lightning hit her as she stood by her door

Malissa ready for burial, I take out her tape
we play it--we "listen" at Malissas wake
She'd captured the sound of a newborn cried
ah! The sound of Granny just ere she died

The tape held sounds of different songbird
each musical note on tape clearly heard
Theres the roar of a train speeding past
catching Malissa's tape to forever last

The rolling water of the oceans tide roar
and a screaming sea gull flying high oer
Then sad cries of sorrow, giggles of joy
tiny ones are laughing, playing with a toy

A ticking clock sounds as time marched past
Malissa's voice sings old hymns that'll last
Near the tapes end we "all" hear the sound
first the loud thunder was grumbling around

We hear the rain falling, then the winds roar
a faint voice called out... chilling our core
Softly calling "Malissa, I am coming for thee"
Malissa's voice cried "OH GOD... I CAN SEE"

The tape then ran out, I shut off the sound
there's no dry eyes as I looked all around
I placed her recorder by my friends side
I closed the steel coffin for its last ride

Yes, Malissa was buried that very same day
midst all her sounds, she so loved to play
My friend loved life, tho she could not see
taught me to listen, to "what" surrounds me
