R.E.L.A.Y.
Oct. 2005 - Jan. 2006
Glaze on 108 Ceramic Tiles, Pencil on Paper, Plastic Laminate, Wood, Latex Paint, etc.
Dimensions Variable (9 x 12 Array of 5 x 5 inch units)
The 108 images in "R.E.L.A.Y." were derived from a process of communication between partners similar to the game "telephone."  The "describer" was given an original drawing and, during the course of a five-minute dialogue, had to convey the form to their "artist" partner, who sketched it out.  Neither could see their partner's drawing.  I then copied the new sketch, trying to capture the essential form.  These "idealized" drawings were then used as the original drawings for a new round of "telephone."  Afterwords, these were rendered in glaze on tile; 12 rounds for each of nine drawings.
THANK YOU TO ALL THE PARTICIPANTS!

This image is a "quiz" of sorts. On the left are the 9 original, first-generation drawings.
On the right are the final, 12th-generation drawings which have "evolved" ("devolved"?).
Just for fun, see if you can match them up before you
