The book begins with the story of the early activities and organizations in the futures field in Canada beginning in the early sixties. It goes on to describe the futures organizations that Fred was interested in outside Canada, including the World Futures Studies Federation, Sweden's Futures Secretariat, the Club of Rome and the World Future Society in Washington. Fred carried the interest in futures into certain departments and agencies in the Canadian government. These are described with a light touch and with some future forecasts and their outcome after a decade or so. Considerable space then is taken to document the start, activities and winding down of the Canadian Association for Futures Studies. Fred was the Association's second president. The lessons learned will be valuable information for other futures organizations in other countries.
In the last chapter Reflections and Directions some thoughts are given that are basic to our global future.
WE MUST CHANGE:-
Economic growth to Stability
Population increase to Population control
Resource consumption to Conservation
Competition to Cooperation
Self-interest to Group interest
And finally, we in the so-called advanced countries are living well, and may not appreciate that we are enjoying life beyond our means. This could be called a Golden Age, which was also true in Ancient Greece in the Age of Pericles c440 BC. when they enjoyed the riches gained by their extensive conquests. Their wealth came from the energy of the slaves they captured; ours mostly from fossil fuels and nuclear energy.
