If you owned an NES during it's heyday you probably have. It was one of the most common and more importantly, popular games at the time. It should be too, as it was heavily advertised on TV and magazines, and later on given away free with a suscription to Nintendo Power. However, I didn't really care for it, despite finishing it when it came out, and it was only until a few years ago that I've given more thought to it. Despite being the first RPG on any console it was quite simple and somewhat inferior to other RPGs that appeared on old computers like the Apple 2, Commodore 64, and PCs like the 386/486 etc. Still it was the first game in the series and they've thankfully gotten better as they went along, with the last one for the system generally regarded as one of the best, if not the best RPG for the NES. ======================================================================= Game Basics ======================================================================= The world of Alefgard is divided into two continents and two islands. The first massive continent encompasses the north, the west, and part of the south section of the world. The second, much smaller continent is located to the south-west, near the bottom right corner. The first island is located in the bottom right corner. The second island is located in the center between the two continents. Although the game is pretty non-linear, there are some restrictions so to speak that'll usually prevent you from going after certain items too soon. [ % ] - Desert [ $ ] - Forest [ @ ] - Hills [ # ] - Mountain [ . ] - Grass [ / ] - Swamp [ ~ ] - Water ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Tips for the uninitiated ------------------------------------------------------------------------ - First and foremost, save often! You'll neever know what you'll run into, especially if you wander off somewhere. If die, you'll end up back in Tantegel Castle with a much lighter wallet and a small blow to your confidence. On the NES, you'll have to talk to the king to save your game, but if you're using an emulator, use save states every so often. ======================================================================= Walkthrough ======================================================================= Tantegel Castle, Floor 2 ------------------------ ########## #.....1..# #.######.# #.#K##P#.# #..X23...# #........# #........# ####=##### #.......V#A ########## Before you can start, the king will talk to you for awhile. After he's done, grab the contents of the chests by using TAKE while over them. You'll get a Torch, 120 Gold, and most importantly, a Magic Key to open the door. Don't bother with the knight in the room, he's useless for information. Once you've collect those items, stand next to the door and use DOOR to open it, then down the stairs with the STAIRS command. The weapons shop is in the north west corner of the town, the item shop is in the south east corner, and the inn is in the south west corner. The weapons shop is the most important place to be right now, so go there. You'll have a nice selection of items to choose from: Bamboo Pole (+2 attack) 10 Gold Club (+4 attack) 60 Gold Copper Sword (+10 attack) 180 Gold Clothes (+2 defence) 20 Gold Leather Armor (+4 defence) 70 Gold Small Shield (+4 defence) 90 Gold There's two choices really. The first one is the Clothes and the Club for 100 Gold. This will give you a decent amount of attack and defence to allow you to pound Slimes and Red Slimes into the ground. You'll also have 20 Gold left over. The second choice is to just buy the Club then go around beating the aforementioned enemies into a fine paste. First off, cast Stopspell to prevent him from doing the same thing then just attack and use HEALMORE when necessary and he'll go down in hurry. There's nothing you really have to worry about. Dragonlord 2 - Now it's time to start worrying. Just kidding. After you mash his human form into a fine paste, he'll show you his true form, which is a huge fire breathing dragon. This continuation of the first battle is much tougher as he now has very high defence which will barely do any damage and a very high attack which will routinely score in the 40's or so. So how do you deal with this heavy hitting bum? The same way you dealt with any other enemy in the game. Attack, attack, attack, then use HEALMORE when your HP is in the 40's-50's. Rinse and repeat a bunch of times and you'll have him KO'd in no time. After he's gone, you'll have the Ball of Light to yourself. Congrats. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Ending ------------------------------------------------------------------------ If you're used to newer RPG's this will be shockingly different for you. No immediate ending here. Instead, you'll get warped outside and get to walk around and get to do whatever you want, except for two major changes. First off, you won't get attacked by enemies at all and if you head into ye olde town and talk to people, you'll find that they'll be praising you for killing the Dragonlord. After the townspeople have inflated your ego a bit, you should make your way back to Tantegel Castle because King Lorik wants to talk to you. He'll talk to you for awhile then you'll turn to leave when... This next little section depends on whether or not you rescued Princess Gwaelin. If you did, she'll step in and ask if you can take her along with you on your journey. She won't take no for an answer so she'll tag along as you exit the castle. A short fanfare will sound and that's the end of the game. You'll get a short message and the credits will roll. "Congratulations! Thou hast restored peace onto the world! But there are many road yet to travel. May the light shine upon thee." Play Dragon Warrior 2 to see what happened with the hero and Princess Gwaelin. ======================================================================= Appendices ======================================================================= Weapons ------- Name | Bamboo Pole Cost | 10 Sell | n/a Attack | 2 Special | None Location | Brecconary, Cantlin ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Name | Club Cost | 60 Sell | n/a Attack | 4 Special | None Location | Brecconary, Cantlin, Garinham ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Name | Copper Sword Cost | 180 Sell | n/a Attack | 10 Special | None Location | Brecconary, Cantlin, Garinham, Kol, Rimuldar ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Name | Hand Axe Cost | 560 Sell | n/a Attack | 15 Special | None Location | Garinham, Rimuldar ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Name | Broad Sword Cost | 1500 Sell | n/a Attack | 20 Special | None Location | Cantlin, Rimuldar ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Name | Flame Sword Cost | 9800 Sell | n/a Attack | 28 Special | None Location | Cantlin ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Name | Erdrick's Sword Cost | n/a Sell | n/a Attack | 40 Special | The only sword that can damage the Dragonlord Location | Castle Charlock Armors ------ Name | Clothes Cost | 20 Sell | n/a Defence | 2 Special | None Location | Brecconary ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Name | Leather Armor Cost | 70 Sell | n/a Defence | 4 Special | None Location | Brecconary, Garinham ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Name | Chain Mail Cost | 300 Sell | n/a Defence | 10 Special | None Location | Cantlin, Garinham ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Name | Half Plate Cost | 1000 Sell | n/a Defence | 16 Special | None Location | Cantlin, Garinham, Kol, Rimuldar ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Name | Full Plate Cost | 3000 Sell | n/a Defence | 24 Special | None Location | Cantlin, Kol, Rimuldar ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Name | Magic Armor Cost | 7700 Sell | n/a Defence | 24 Special | Restores 1 HP for every 4 steps Location | Cantlin, Rimuldar ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Name | Erdrick's Armor Cost | n/a Sell | n/a Defence | 28 Special | Restores 1 HP for every step; Immunity to swamps, barriers Location | Hauksness Shields ------- Name | Small Shield Cost | 90 Sell | n/a Defence | 4 Special | None Location | Brecconary, Kol ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Name | Large Shield Cost | 800 Sell | n/a Defence | 10 Special | None Location | Cantlin, Garinham ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Name | Silver Shield Cost | 14800 Sell | n/a Defence | 20 Special | None Location | Cantlin Items/Key Items --------------- Name | Cursed Belt Cost | n/a Sell | 180 Effect | Curses you.
