He teaches "the others" (mainly, Vaan, Reks and Rasler) of what it means to be a man...and who better to show them what being a man is all about then Basch?
Final Fantasy XII: Ashe & Basch Music Video - "It Is You (I Have Loved)"
Although no romance is going on between Basch and Ashe in FFXII, I still think it is a future possibility.
After all, in the closing movie, we even learn that "Ashe misses Basch." Ever since I got introduced to their characters, I wanted them to become a couple. The Princess needs her Knight! I think it would make perfect sense if they eventually end up together :)
