Dear Mr Sam Horowitz and the Genetics Club,

Thank you for your interest  in Singapore's biomedical research scene, and for your excellent suggestion.

Indeed, for some time now, we have been inviting overseas scientists to come and experience Singapore first-hand. We agree with you that such opportunities allow visitors to see for themselves the advantages of living in Singapore and might interest them in living and working here.

Some of our recent and ongoing outreach efforts:

1) Distinguished Visitors Programme
This programme brings leading scientists to Singapore where they will visit public research institutes, universities, hospitals and specialty centres. For more information, please visit: http://www.a-star.edu.sg/astar/biomed/action/biomed_dvp.do

2) Inviting conference and seminar speakers to Singapore
Some recent scientific conference held in Singapore include the 5th HUGO Pacific Meeting & 6th Asia-Pacific Conference on Human Genetics (17-20 Nov 2004) and the First International SBE Conference on Bioengineering and Nanotechnology (26-29 Sept 2004).

Given your interest in genetics, you may be familiar with some of the speakers at the HUGO conference, which included Jay Tischfield from Rutgers University and Prof Jenefer Mary Blackwell from the University of Cambridge.

3) Sponsoring postdocs and graduate students to international conferences
In Oct 2003, A*STAR sponsored postdocs and graduate students who attended the International Stem Cell Conference which was held in Singapore. And in fact, we have an upcoming meeting you may be interested in.

From 25-30 Oct 2005, the first ever Keystone meeting to be held outside of North America, will be held in Singapore, and interested graduate students and postdocs who would like to come to the meeting in Singapore, can apply for travel scholarships. For details, please visit: http://www.keystonesymposia.org/Students/Scholarships.cfm

We hope this information will be useful to you and look forward to seeing you one day in Singapore!

Best regards,
