From X-Men to Genetics

What does Sabretooth from the X-Men have to do with Genetics? Everything. Science is now able to combine traits from different animals. The example in Sabretooth would be the strength of a tiger with a humans body.

Here is the question; should we do it? What's wrong with becoming stronger? Wouldn't that be a good thing? But what if along with the strength came the tigers personality? That could be a problem. Also do we have the right to change them so much that they don't look or act like people anymore? What if the person didn't want to have super strength or look different? I don't know all the answers but it sure is interesting thinking about it.

That's what got me interested in genetics in the first place. If you talk about X-Men in your class you will definetly have everyones atttention.First of all you could ask which X-Men do you think could be created using genetics? Which ones couldn't?  Some of the X-Men could be created  like Wolverine , Toad, and Beast. The ones with super strength or some animal quality could probably be created. But a person who could freeze water or burst into flame I don't think that is going to be possible. The discussion  will give everyone a chance to contribute thier ideas and it will show them that genetics is fun.

Anyway I think that talking about this in class will excite everyone to what genetics can do. But it will also bring up the ethical questions of should we do it.
