4/6/03 KFS AP The crack of the bat will finally drown out the sounds of jackhammers in southern Connecticut this week as baseball returns to New Haven. The Cones have their work cut out for them if they want to give the home folks reason for optimism, as the Menace invade Yale Stadium fresh off a strong week one victory. New Haven will look to defend the home pavement with a surprising group of hitters, including week one stud Alex Gonzalez and newcomer Carl Crawford. Derek Jeter begins his stint on the disabled list this week, but the T-Cones look to have the middle infielders necessary to fill in. Joining the famous New Haven bullpen this week is flamethrowing youngster Mike McDougal of the Royals. Marshall Street will be looking to duplicate one of the strongest pitching weeks in recent memory, as Coach Watterson sends his power 4 of Prior, Clemens, Oswalt and Hudson back out to the mound. Joining them this week are Mike Mussina and Jason Schmidt, who was also snowed out on Monday. At the plate, Sammy Sosa will begin his quest for 600 home runs this week after swatting number 500 in Week One. In the 2 years he has been a member of the Menace alone, Sosa has hit 499, with the other home run coming back in 1988, when he was just a wispy-mustached slick-permed glint in the Marshall St GM's eye.
