4/24/03 NEW HAVEN - New Haven Traffic Cones manager Jeff Stanley announced today that the T-Cones were one half of the first trade to take place in the NECBL this season. Commissioner Friedman's Speedway Starwipes sent Giants closer Tim Worrell to New Haven in exchange for Marlins closer Braden Looper and Reds closer Scott Williamson. At a press conference this afternoon, Stanley commented on the trade, "It was about time someone in the league made a trade. I'm shocked that it took this long for a trade to take place, but I'm even more shocked that it's my team that's involved in the trade. Our thinking was that since there's a good chance that our 2nd pick Rob Nen could be on the DL for the rest of the season, we should make a move to gain the Giants' saves that we expected to benefit from Nen. Fortunately Coach Ryan and I were able to work out a deal that we feel will benefit both our teams. Scott and Braden are good closers and we wish them the best with Speedway, except against us. Basically, they just didn't seem to fit into my team plan this season. Besides, at this point, we're guaranteed either the 'Best Trade of the Season Award' or the 'Worst Trade of the Season Award'!" The Cones filled the empty roster spot created by the trade with Yankee third baseman Robin Ventura. On picking up another Yankee, Stanley commented, "I really hate to do it, but the bottom line is that he's putting up better numbers than former Met (Edgardo) Alfonzo or current Met (Ty) Wigginton." As soon as the numbers justify trading or dropping him, I definitely will. And by the way, that rule applies to Matsui, Jeter, Rivera and Mondesi as well. Geez, I can't believe I have 5 freakin' Yankees on this team. For what it's worth, at least I don't have Roger Clemens." Worrell will start in next week's series against the 15-12 Woosta Pimp Roostas.
