Bulldogs win first playoff game
By Tammy Nunez

Fontainebleau coach Larry Favre worried all week that his team might not be able to handle the pressure of trying to win the school's first playoff game in school history.

He didn't need to fret. The Bulldogs pounded Carver from the opening kick in Fontainebleau's first home playoff game, sailing to the 37-12 Class 5A bi-district victory. Fontainebleau will play Brother Martin next week in the regional round.

The Bulldogs held the Rams to 37 yards in the first half, and Christian Ducre led the Bulldogs' offense with 14 carries for 74 yards and touchdowns of 26 and 9 yards. With Justin Beitzel's 27-yard field goal and Ben Cunningham's 17-yard touchdown pass to Bryan Elliser, the Bulldogs led 24-0 at halftime.

From the opening kickoff, Fontainebleau set the tone. The Bulldogs recovered the onside kick to Carver, and four plays later Ducre pulled past a gang of tacklers for a 26-yard touchdown run, the first of his two first-half scores. Beitzel kicked the extra point for a 7-0 lead.

Carver struggled to get its running game going and floundered on punts in the first half. The Rams logged 7 first-half rushing yards and could not put together a sustained drive. Shanked punts gave Fontainebleau excellent field position throughout the first half. Carver quarterback Larry Congress completed three of 12 passes in the first half for 29 yards, but he threw an interception and had minus-21 yards rushing in the first half.

Though Carver's Lawrence Nathan broke through for two touchdowns in the second half, it was too late. By the time Nathan scored on a 3-yard touchdown run, the Bulldogs already had 37 points.

After catching a 31-yard touchdown pass from Congress in the fourth quarter, Nathan walked over to the miniature Bulldog statue in the end zone, and slapped it, drawing an unsportsmanlike penalty. Carver finished with 15 penalties for 135 yards; Fontainebleau had 230 yards in second-half penalties.
