October 23, 2004 Bulldogs turn back Tigers By Tammy Nunez Christian Ducre didn't feel much like talking after Fontainebleau's home game against Slidell on Friday night. He wanted to celebrate. Ducre rushed for a season-high 229 yards on 30 carries for two touchdowns in Fontainebleau's 22-16 District 5-5A victory. It was the Bulldogs' first victory against the Tigers in school history and redemption after losing the district title to Slidell last season. Fontainebleau entered last year's game undefeated in district. The Bulldogs now sit second in district to undefeated Covington. I think everyone was scared last year," Ducre said. Tonight? "We weren't," he said. "It's a very emotional win," Fontainebleau coach Larry Favre said. "I just found myself really pressing this week. I've never felt so much like there is a monster on my back in 16 years coaching like I have this past week. We're glad it's gone." Ducre made sure of that with a 15-yard touchdown run with 2:48 remaining that gave Fontainebleau a two-touchdown lead. Slidell came out strong in the second half, and Liuzza passed to Brian King and Dustin Moreau for second-half touchdowns of 34 and 7 yards. Both two-point conversions were good, but Slidell didn't score the last touchdown until 38 seconds remained. Fontainebleau recovered the ensuing onside kick to seal the victory. Fontainebleau drove six times into Slidell (5-3, 3-2) territory in the second half, but did not score a touchdown. Bulldogs quarterback Ben Cunningham powered Fontainebleau to its first score by taking a keeper 65 yards to the Tigers' 12-yard line. But the Bulldogs gained only eight yards on the following three carries. Justin Beitzel kicked a 20-yard field goal. Liuzza had a tough time in the first half. He threw two interceptions and completed four of 14 attempts under duress from the Fontainebleau front. Rudy Odom slapped the ball out of Liuzza's hand, and the fumble rolled out of the back of the end zone, giving Fontainebleau a safety and 5-0 lead with 8:07 remaining until halftime. "Maybe it's time for our defense to get a little respect," Favre said. "It's really hard to shut out that offense, and we did it for one half." Ducre set up the final Fontainebleau score in the first half after returning a kickoff 50 yards and then accounting for 22 of the 26-yard drive. Beitzel kicked a 25-yard field goal after missing a 36-yarder earlier in the half for the 8-0 lead the Bulldogs would hold through halftime. |
