October 30, 2004 Bulldogs thump Wave By Tammy Nunez "Heard anything from Jack Salter Stadium?" After Fontainebleau handily defeated Ponchatoula 28-7 in the Swamp, that was the first question the Bulldogs' players, coaches, and fans had on the sideline. The Bulldogs were hoping for a St. Paul's victory at Covington, which would have moved them into a tie for the District 5-5A lead. Fontainebleau learned it's hopes for the school's first district title in football were still alive with Covington's loss. But first, the Bulldogs (7-2, 5-1) had to beat Ponchatoula (4-4, 2-4) which was coming off consecutive weeks of lopsided losses. We were really worried about a letdown," Fontainebleau coach Larry Favre said. The Bulldogs erased that fear quickly with two touchdowns in three first-half possessions. Christian Ducre rushed for 161 yards on 23 carries for three touchdowns of 3, 10, and 1 yards. Steven Korte rushed for 49 yards on 11 carries and scored on a 1-yard run in the second quarter and also ran in a two-point conversion. "We didn't have a No. 12 (Korte's number) or a No. 24 (Ducre), and that was the difference in the game," Ponchatoula coach Scott Martin said. Ponchatoula didn't have the same push from its defensive line, either. Fontainebleau held the Green Wave to 57 yards in the first half, and though it gave up some big runs in the second half, the Bulldogs were ahead 21-0 by the time Ponchatoula scored with 2:11 remaining in the game. Akino Brumfield escaped for a 51-yard touchdown run for the Green Wave touchdown. But less than one minute later, Ducre dodged up the middle of Ponchatoula's defense, staying on his feet and breaking free for a 41-yard run that put the Bulldogs on the Green Wave 5-yard line. Two plays later, Ducre scored from 1 yard on a run that, coupled with Justin Beitzel's kick, put the finishing touches the victory. A consistent offense and sturdy defense fueled the Bulldogs in the first half. The Bulldogs moved 80 yards on 14 plays and used more than six minutes for their first touchdown, a 3-yard run by Ducre. Beitzel missed the extra-point attempt. Quarterback Ben Cunningham then sparked a drive with a 27-yard scramble on fourth-and-nine that set up Korte's 1-yard touchdown run.
