October 16, 2004 Bulldogs completely dominate By Tammy Nunez On a night when everything clicked for Fontainebleau quarterback Ben Cunningham and his offense, Cunningham was focused on another part of his team as he walked to the post-game huddle. He could manage only two words about the Bulldogs' defense in Friday's 31-0 District 5-5A victory over crosstown rival Mandeville. "They're incredible," Cunningham said. The Bulldogs (5-2, 3-1) held Mandeville to minus -4 rushing yards, 34 total yards and two first downs and nabbed two interceptions. Fontainebleau also scored on a blocked punt that Ashton Autin recovered in the end zone for a touchdown. It was Fontainebleau's fourth shutout this season and appeared needed after a tough district loss to Covington last week. "It was probably our most complete game of the season against a very good football team," Fontainebleau coach Larry Favre said. The Bulldogs' offense also had their way against the Skippers (3-4, 1-4) en route to 309 total yards. Christian Ducre accounted for 81 rushing and 46 receiving yards, and Cunningham had a solid performance. He finished 10-of-14 passing for 101 yards and threw an 11-yard touchdown pass to Bryan Elliser to finish Fontainebleau's first drive. "You always get hyped for Mandeville," Cunningham said. The Skippers had a chance to get back into the game when Fontainebleau snapped a ball over punter Justin Beitzel's head. Mandeville took over on the Bulldogs' 13-yard line, but Rudy Odom stopped Michael Pam on a first-and-goal carry, jarring the ball loose, which Fontainebleau recovered. Fontainebleau scored on three of its first four drives to jump out to a 17-0 halftime lead. Fontainebleau's Blake Guidry intercepted a Patrick Mauti pass with 6:53 remaining in the second quarter to give the Bulldogs possession on the Skippers' 40-yard line. Six plays later, Steven Korte ran untouched into the end zone from 4 yards. Beitzel, who would later kick a 40-yard field goal in the second quarter, was good on the extra point for a 14-0 lead. |
