November 6, 2004 Bulldogs capture share of title By Marty Mulé Fontainebleau's one-two punch of Steven Korte and Christian Ducre KO'd St. Paul's on Friday night, as the Bulldogs won a share of their first-ever district football title. Korte scored four touchdowns and Ducre rushed for 115 yards, as the Bulldogs defeated the Wolves 44-14 Friday night. Fontainebleau and Covington, which beat Mandeville 23-0, are District 5-5A co-champs. After a shaky start, Fontainebleau took command, although the turn of events partly was gift-wrapped. St. Paul's committed five turnovers, losing four fumbles in the first half when the Bulldogs scored 23 points in 5:35. A fumble recovery led to Fontainebleau's first, and tying, touchdown, then Ducre returned a punt 86 yards to put the Bulldogs ahead for good. "That's what ignited us," Fontainebleau coach Larry Favre said. "St. Paul's went ahead and kind of had us on our heels. We pulled even, but Christian's kick return really got us back in the game." Korte, who rushed for 102 yards and caught three passes for 54 yards, transferred from St. Paul's two years ago. He said of beating his old teammates, "We're (Fontainebleau) 8-2, district champions, and we'll host a playoff game next week. I'm feeling pretty good." It's the Bulldogs' first football district title in the program's 11-year history. St. Paul's took the fight to Fontainebleau from the start. Jared Morise finished a nine-play, 80-yard Wolves drive when he shot into the end zone from 24 yards with 2:23 remaining in the first quarter. From there, however, Fontainebleau came back. After recovering a fumble on the St. Paul's 22, the Bulldogs took seven plays to even the score, Bryan Elliser latching on to a 9-yard pass from Ben Cunningham with 5:35 left until halftime. Two minutes later came Ducre's return. Three plays from scrimmage
later, after St. Paul's started from its own 6, Scott Cardella tackled
Periera in the end zone for a safety. |
