wind recorders are not all written in the key of C, as many people think.  Only the soprano and tenor recorders are in C, with the soprano sounding one octave above the written pitch.  The alto recorder is in F as is the bass, with the alto sounding a fourth above and the bass sounding a fifth below their written pitches, respectively.  (FYI: There is also another recorder called the 'great bass' which is in C and sounds one octave below its written pitch, but it is rarely used and is extremely expensive.  I did not write a part for this instrument because few exist and it would make a performance of an arrangement including this instrument nearly impossible.  There is also a sopranino recorder which sounds like a dog whistle, so scratch that one, too...) - A.Morrison
