I'm joining a chess club and I felt that you should know some tips about chess. But don't take forever like those angels on the right. Actually learn the game and soon play the game.
Pieces: If you have never played chess before and don't know what each of the pieces are, then you need to read this. If you already know the pieces, then wait next week when I give the instructions.
Rooks: Rooks are actually castles. They are the pieces that look like castles. There are two of them for each side. Rooks can move up, down, and across, not diagonal. They can move as far as they want on each turn. To attack, a rook moves to the space with a piece it wants to capture.

Pawns: Pawns are the shortest pieces in the game. There are eight of them for each side. On your first move, can move one or two spaces up. On your other moves, you can move only one space up. Your pawn can only go up, unless it is attacking another piece. To attack, move diagonal. When your pawn get to the other side of the board, it does something called rescuing. You will learn about rescuing later.
Knights: Real knights ride on hourses. Knights in chess are pieces that look like horses. There are two of them for each side. Knights are the most interesting piece. It is the only piece that can jump over other pieces (that is not a capture). Knights go in an "L" shape. They go three spaces up, down, or across. If it goes up or down, move it one space across after that. If it goes across, move it up or down one space after that. To attack, a knight figures out a way to get onto the space with the piece he wants to attack.
Bishops: Bishops usually have a cut near the top of them. There are two of them for each side. Bishops move diagonally as far as they want in any diagonal direction. To attack, a bishop moves to the space with a piece it wants to capture.
Queens: Queens are the second tallest pieces. There is one for each side. Queens are very special. They can move any direction (up down or across) in any amount of spaces. To attack, a queen moves to the space with a piece it wants to capture.
Kings: Kings are the most important pieces. They are the tallest pieces. Sometimes you'll see kings have a cross on top of them. There is one king for each side. Kings can move any direction: up, down, or across. But they can only move up, down, or across one space per move. If a king gets captured the game is over. To attack, a king moves to the space with a piece it wants to capture. Sometimes, when kings get to the other side of the board, they can rescue. You'll learn about rescuing later.
Those all the pieces. Come back next Tuesday to learn how to play the game. If you already know how to play and want to play a game, grab a chess board, chess pieces, and a player to start playing a game. Or you can check out one of these chess sites below.
