TASK FOUR: Poetry

There is a poem in
The Perks of Being a Wallflower that moves Charlie quite a bit.  While it is untitled and the poet unknown, it is offered in its entirety.  CLICK HERE to read this poem as a warm-up exercise.  Think about the overarching theme of this poem and try to make some connections between this poem and events or characters from the story.  Think about connections you can make between this poem and other books we have read this year (namely, Catcher in the Rye).  Then come back to this page.

OK, Welcome back.
Post some thoughts in our on-line forum.
Allen Ginsberg Typing "Howl" in San Francisco, June 1956
Now, follow this link to Pif Magazine and a poem by Liam Rector entitled "Your Tales of the Suburbs."  First, read him poem and then follow the links to an audio clip of Rector reading his poem.  Again, while reading and listening to this poem, think of how it might be connected to themes, characters, events, and the tone of The Perks of Being a Wallflower.

Then, it's time to find your own poem.  This poem should be thematically connected to a theme or characher or event from Chbosky's book.  Follow
this link to a Google search for poetry.  If you would prefer, try FavoritePoem.org to find something of interest.

As an addendum to this exercise, you might want to try your hand at writing your own poem and posting it on our forum.
